Alcohol does have carbohydrates in it, but different types of beverages have different amounts of carbs. It has a lot to do with what is used to make the alcohol and how it is made. (ie: many beers are made from wheat, barley, corn, or rice...typically high in carbohydrates. Wine is often made from grapes or other fruits that are then fermented to produce alcohol) In short- alcohol does have carbohydrates, but the amount of carbs varies a good bit between various types of drinks.

As for where calories come from... You can find products that have zero carbohydrates, but are still pretty high in calories. A calorie is actually a measure of energy. Basically, everything you eat requires a certain amount of energy to "burn" it completely. Different types of ingredients take more energy for your body to process completely.

Good question.  I am a red wine drinker and there are minute amounts of protein and only 1% carbs.  No fats.  I'd like to know too!
