calorie intake?

I was wondering if someone could help me determine what my calorie intake should be a day? I am 24 about 5'6" and 294 lbs. Trying to be more healthy and take better care of myself. I used to only eat once a day (usually dinner). Any help would be greatly appreciated :)

I thought I could be pregnant but I took a test and it was negative. Morning is the worst but it happens all throughout the day too just not as nauseous. I am not counting exact calories just ball parking it. For breakfast I usually have 2 egg whites, a piece of toast with cinnamon on it and a small glass of skim milk. Then an apple or other fruit at about 9:00. Then for lunch I do a salad and water. Then another small snack like some fit and active popcorn and water around 2:00. I try to have a small snack every 2 hours or so (I have read it helps keeps your metabolism going all day). Then I try to eat supper around 7:00, but some days it is a little later because of work. I try not to eat after 9:00

Congratulations on the 5 lb loss... That's good; 1-2 lbs/week is about right, so you're on track.

No, not really... you shouldn't be getting sick.  My first, obvious question has to be is there any way you could be pregnant?  That sounds almost like morning sickness.

How many calories are you eating/day and how long before you go to bed are you eating?  Is morning the only time you have an issue?

I have been eating healthier for almost a month now... I have had a few bad days were I have slipped a bit, but for the most part have stayed consistent. I have lost about 5 lbs already... but I get extremely nauseous now if I go too long without eating. It gets so bad that in the morning before I get a chance to eat I have to run to the bathroom but when I get there I don't get sick. After a few minutes it goes away but if I don't eat something within a few minutes it gets bad again. Is this normal?

Forgot to mention that as you lose weight, you will need less calories, so they will have to be recalculated periodically.

It's also a good idea to keep a food diary to track your calories... They add up a lot quicker than we think.  MH has a great food tracker you could try and it's easy to use.

Based on your current weight/height and age, you need 2100 calories to maintain your current weight.  If you want to lose weight, you will need to cut calories and/or  burn more through exercise.

1 pound is equal to 3500 calories, so in order to lose one pound/week, you would need to eat 500 calories less/day (500 X 7 = 3500).  Most of us find it easier to eat 250 calories less and burn 250 calories more through exercise. By splitting it, we're not making any drastic changes - just simple things that we can live with.

It's best to eat several meals a day, but studies are showing that it's not really that big a deal if you skip a meal here and there.  It is best, though, if you eat your biggest meals early in the day, so you aren't going to bed with a lot of undigested food in your stomach.  I don't eat breakfast, lunch is my big meal of the day and I just eat a light dinner (an apple or other fruit, a bowl of cereal, oatmeal, eggs & toast, etc) and that only because I have med I have to take in the evening just after food.

The biggest thing is to cut out junk food and sodas - you don't have to do it all at once.  If you drink sodas, simply replace one/day with a glass of water or unsweetened tea (if you  have to have a sweetener, use stevia, not artificial sweeteners).  Same with junk food - replace one junk food snack/day with a healthy snack, such as an apple with peanut butter, yogurt with low fat granola,  cut up raw veggies or other healthy snack.  Eventually, you won't miss the junk food.
