Hello your help on this.. im miffed?? throat closing?
Dear Doctor,
I would like to thank you in advance for your time. Will make this brief. two times now this happened in the past 4 yrs.. When I had the stomach flu and went to vomit, after I had thrown up, like usual I went to take a breath, and nothing. I could not suck one bit of air into my lungs.. like my throat had closed up. After about 30 seconds (felt like an hour) I was able to suck alittle air and then breathing started to become normal. After this, I was hoarse and could not talk much for several hours. The first time it happened I paniced and ripped the towel holder out of the wall.. I thought I was dying. The first time I thought it might be a fluke but when it happened again I am now terrified to vomit. To make a long story short, the last occurance, it only happend with the first vomit episode. i had a bout of the flu and threw up about 5x's that day. So I wonder why did it only occur with the first vomit episode and not the rest of the day. Let me add I am a healthy 32 yr old female, no health problems. I rarely get sick and throw up so no throat issues that I am aware of.. I know my thyroid is ok.. so what do you think occured? I had thought possibly I aspirated some vomit? But it was unlike anything ever before happening to me. Like it closed or something closed. Have youEVER heard of anything like this? I know nobody else and my Drs were not to concearned.. I am scared of ever throwing up and I always try to avoid it at all costs.

My Dr said (this was at a rapid response clinic) I was out of town when this happened.. he seemed to think that in the throat we have a flap that closes the wind pipe from the esophageous and that this "flap" may have become stuck when I threw up. I just dont know.. its odd.. the first time it caught me totally off guard because as usual I threw up and expected to be able to breath afterwards.. when I could not suck up any air.. I thought for sure it was over.. then when it happened the second time.. I was 6 months pregnant.. I thought I would die! I just dont know... I thought about going back to my family doc and askign what he thought about it... I just hate to throw up now and will do anything to avoid it.. I even drink mylanta if Im thinking I might vomit to help dilute the acid...

I agree with EVERYTHING that the others told you.
Also, when vomit comes up, if a little is "aspirated" (breathed in), it can cause the vocal cords to go into a "closing-up" spasm called VOCAL CORD DYSFUNCTION.
This happens to GERD patients too, when stomach acid or stomach enzymes "reflux" up to the throat area.
Ask your doctor if he or she thinks it's OK for you to try CHEWING one or two CHEWABLE DGL(De-Glycyrrhizinated Licorice) tablets about 20 minutes before each meal. The DGL is a "safe" form of licorice which doesn't raise blood pressure. The DGL helps to heal the esophagus and stomach. The DGL seems to prevent "reflux" in some people.
Small amounts of fresh, organic carrot juice can help heal also.

The vocal cords are sensitive, and can be burned by inhaled vomit. Laryngospasm means spasm/closing of the vocal cords in the larynx (voice box), behind the Adam's apple.
What does your doctor say he or she thinks was happening during these episodes?

Some of the things you described are side effects of this medicine for some people. Our 21 yr. old daughter almost died from it. It's prescribed to counteract nausea but can cause spasms in the jaw and neck and shortness of breath
NO never taken the med.. why?!!!! It was odd... Anyone else ever have this?
Read your post and I'm curious if you ever have taken the drug Compazine for nausea?
I think it's possible that you aspirated some of your own vomit.
Also the fact that you threw up 5 times would lead to me to think that you were throwing up bile towards the end. Bile is pure acid and can burn tissue in your throat that would cause the hoarseness. The fact that this has only happened twice in four years isn't any cause for alarm.
