Pain on Right Side of Body

Hi Everyone!  I'm hoping that someone will be able to assist me - At the beginning of the year, I noticed that I started to get a severe pain on the right side of my body, under my rib cage.  In addition, my ribs (especially one of them in particular) is extremely sore.  After it got progressively worse, I went to my doctor.  He figured it was my gall bladder, so he ran tests.  Nothing - all looks good....    So, then he thought I might have broken a rib, so he ran X-rays.  Once again, everything is fine.  Then they checked my liver.  Also great....  They are pretty much dumbfounded.... he's starting to think that it's "shingles" - except I don't have blisters or a rash.
I have tried changing my diet to see if it is food related, but the pain persists even if I go through the day without eating.  The only other symptoms that I have (I'm not sure if it's related or not...) is occasional itchy skin (especially on my tummy, shoulders, chest, and upper thighs) but when I scratch it, my skin is incredibly sore.  It's very sensitive and painful, which is a new development.  I haven't had this before.  I got nauseated and actually sick (vomit) only once (back in March).  Again, I'm not sure if any of this is related - but I am hoping that someone will have an idea.  The doctors are clueless, and I'm tired of giving them money each week for them to scratch their heads and take more incorrect guesses. (ha!)  Thanks for any assistance!  Much love!  ~Bubbles

I think you should get to a specialist asap. I've been skimming the net to figure out what my right upper quadrant pain is and all the sites about liver disease mention the pain, vomiting and in particular the itching. please get a second opinion before this worsens.

Many times we are tested to find that the results show nothing.  In your case I had exactly the same thing, including the itching.  Unless you go to the doctor or the ER when these symptoms are actively causing you problems, you will not get the kind of reading you need to diagnosis you problem.  Problem with that is, it usually takes a week or two to see the doctor.  Believe me I went through 8 years of this business.  Finally I was diagnosised with Sphincter of Oddi Dysfunction.  I had my gall bladder removed in December of 1994 and continued with pain until December of 2001.  Now I avoid red meat and anything with a high fat content.  90% of the time I feel pretty good and with the other 10%, usually it is my fault.  SOD is lumped in with the Irritable Bowel Syndrome, but very hard to diagnosis, unless the gastroenterologist speciality is the biliary tree.  Your University Hospitals are usually up on the, off beat kind of diseases.  I hope this information is of a help to you.  Good Luck!
