Rectal Bleeding

Hello,

For the last month or so I've noticed a slight scraping or painful sensation while initiating a bowl movement.  I've noticed bright red blood at the end of it as well.  It typically shows up in the paper and a few drops of blood in the water and in the very tail end of the movement while everything else looks fine.  It does seem to hurt in the intro or  peak of the movement more.

I've noticed it happen 3 times now....about once every 8 days or so.  It does seem to happen again on a larger movement.

It does feel as if there may be some cut internally but there is nothing visible externally.  The blood does seem to stop after the movement is over but am left with a feeling of soreness or sensitivity after.

I've been drinking more water and eating more veggies as well as taking stool softeners to help it but it doesn't seem it has the time to heal up and I was curious if there was any other options for home treatment or if you think this could be a more serious situation?

I do not have health insurance as I'm a free lancer so I most likely can't afford any major tests I'd be asked to take at a doctors office but I was curious if you had any info or help you could offer me.

Thanks so much!

MEDICAL PROFESSIONAL
There are many reasons for rectal bleeding, ranging from hemorrhoids to colon cancer.

That said, cancer needs to be ruled out.  An endoscopy is recommended, with the colonoscopy being the more comprehensive test.  Depending on your age and risk factors, a flexible sigmoidoscopy can be considered as well.

In any case, these options should be discussed with your personal physician.

If you need a test, try to get it. Some doctors will adjust fees or arrange payment schedules. You don't say what sort of freelancing you do; there are sometimes professional groups through which one can get health insurance. If you are in the Bay Area and in media, I can suggest one possible possiiblity; email me privately.
