Symptoms I am experiencing...

Last Summer I began to experience extreme itching after a day working outiside. I had attributed this to high perspiration and bacteria growth. I took lots of showers using bacterial soap to no avail.

Then, I experienced an extreme case of facial swelling (lips, eyes and asthma like throat restriction) after a dinner meal.  The symptoms disappeared in about 24 hours. That came and went in over a period of several months.  Then, along with lesser levels of facial swelling, I began to have hives that itched intensely.  And, I experience intense "heartburn" or gas when I have the hive symptoms. Even later I began to have lesser levels of hives but am now experiencing intense itching particularly on my chins and lower legs.  My physician Dr. R. Kennedy, MD of Dothan, Alabama is stiffled.
He has done blood tests and a liver scan.  My last blood test of 4/7/2000 show the following abnormalties: high levels of alkaline phosphatase (181/normal is 40-150), GGT (76/normal is 7-51), my Monos are slightly low (2.4/normal 2.9-10.0), and my cholesteral and triglycerides are high, but have always been high without medication.  I was on Lipitor when the facial swelling and hives began. I have been on aspirin since my high cholesteral was detected in the 1980's.  Dr. Kennedy stopped all medication and sent me to an allergist where nothing resulted.

My liver scan didn't show anything wrong, but my physician said "it showed some cloudiness."  He said there may be some "blockage."  I don't know what he means or what should be done if that is the case.  Presently he has me on 180 MG Allegra, 10 MG Doxepin HCL and 30 MG Prevacid.

Any suggestions I can pass on to my physician?

Thanks,
Al

The signs and symptoms you experienced after food intake indicate that you had an anaphylactic reaction to something in the food . The most common food substances producing these symptoms are proteinaceous in nature like the seafood .Lipitor is a cholesterol lowering drug that can have harmful side effects on the liver and the high blood cholesterol can itself lead to a compromised liver state - other  common factors compromising liver function include Alcohol and the medicines metabolised in liver . Rule out these factors.

THE DOXEPIN WILL CAUSE BLOATING AND SWELLING AND WEIGHT GAIN FOR A LOT OF PEOPLE.  I KNOW WHAT IT DOES TO ME.  PREVACID DIDN'T HELP ME VERY MUCH.  I HAVE BEEN ON PRILOSEC FOR ABOUT A YEAR AND IT HELPS ME MORE.  THANKS,

Al Barrs ,   a similar problem shared with me by a friend
at work.  She had a very high alkaline also.  Her doctor told
her to only drink water that was spring or distilled.  Her water
in her home had a high alkaline content and was making her
very ill.  She is much better now.  She told me she began
feeling better after just a few days.  She only uses water
that she has purchased.  She also cooks with her distilled,
or spring water.  Maybe this will help.

Al, I've been having outbreaks of hives for years, so I can sympathize with you!  They are so annoying and itch like crazy, as you know!  I used to just use Hydroxyxine (Atarax), which is very effective in my case, but is not very fast-acting and is actually too sedating unless taken in small dosages.  I like Allegra, which you say that you are on now.  I don't feel sedating effects from it, or at least nothing on the order of what Atarax causes.  In my case, heredity is the main culprit in the hive outbreaks.  My mom's side of the family has many people with these weird allergies.  In my case, I often get hives from unknown causes, although I am aware of a number of allergies, such as to seafood and iodine (including contrast dyes).

I wish you good luck in getting your medical problems resolved.

A few years agoI bought some wallnut oil and used some over a salad, I am not allergic to nuts as far as I know, although I am to some things mostly fumes.
That evening I had the most terrible griping pains in my loins and sides of my abdomen that you can imagine, they lasted all night long.  I then had blood in my urine and had to pass urine every few minutes I did not connect it particularly to the wallnut oil at that time.
About a year later I again used some new wallnut oil and experienced exactly the same symptoms coming on just as suddenly and severely as the first time.  Never will I use wallnut oil again.

To Al Barrs

Your symptoms? are very close to that of those who suffer from URTICARA and/or ANGIOEDEMA/HEREDITARY ANGIOEDEMA.

Iwas recently diagnosed with "fatty liver" after an Ultrasound and CT of the abdomen and pelvis. My physician told me that this is not abnormal and would require no treatment. After some research I was led to believe that a Liver Bx was necessary for a definite diagnosis.

You may have a blockage in the common bile duct.  I too suffered with the itching (this was accompanied with a very high bilirubin.)  Do you know what your bilarubin is?  I also had chemically induced hepatitis after taking a chloesteral lowering drug previous to the problem.

The itching is unbelieveable -- do you break out in very large patches of hives?  Get a second opinion and get one fast.  Second opinions are usually paid for by your insurance.  Go to a facility that is a teaching hospital -- they usually have the best doctors.  Don't put this off!

This sounds to me like an allergy that may have affected your system is a strange way. Of course, I'm no doctor; but I do know that before I have an asthma attack my chin itches (very strange, but a nice forewarning, although my asthma rarely consists of anything but slight wheezing these days); also when i used to go for long walks in my old neighborhood a few years back my legs whould itch extremely. I thought it was a circulation problem, but sometimes would be accompanied by asthma attacks, and ive never had that problem since I've lived and walked elsewhere. You could have come in contact with something poisonous to your system and it might have damaged something. I hope that's not the case, but it thought i'd throw that out there since the chin itching thing with wheezing is very familiar to me. I may be totally wrong, who knows? I would get a second opinion at another allergist.

I have just reviewed all of the comments and would like to tell you that I was reviewing a website of different illnesses last night. All of you exhibit at least some of the same symptoms as I. They are associated with the following disorders: Hypoglycemia, Hypothyroidism, Hiatal Hernis, Peptic Ulcer. Some of these have similar symptoms and one could have a one or a combination of them. Good Luck!

Ok here are my problems lately,

Severe night sweats, yellow/light tan colored stool with undigested pieces of food (i hope thats food) in it, fatigue, slight yellow tinge to eyes and skin.  I know what this all means and none of it is good, I was wondering if there are any meds or anything that can help besides liver transplants.

Please email me if you can also.

I have had some of the same symptoms, Alk/Phos and SGOT GGT up, itching, heart racing after eating, getting very hot and nauseous. Did you have your gallbladder checked and hiatal hernia?
I have been browsing the net to find an answer and came across this: If this happens after drinking alcohol, eating tomatoes, bananas or walnuts it could be a carcinoid, slow growing cancer.
I am also having a lot of pain.
Did your doctor mention allergies? Could be possible.
Don't worry about cancer now, please, just wanted to mention it. I read it is so rare( carcinoid syndrome) that a lot of GPs don't know anything about it.
