Blastocystis hominis is an anaerobic protozoan parasite frequently found in the human gastrointestinal tract. Some refer to it as a pathogen, some as a non-pathogen. The important point is that eradication of the parasite does not necessarily lead to resolution of symptoms. In fact, a thorough evaluation should be done first to exclude other causes.
I would suggest a colonoscopy and/or CT scan to evaluate the symptoms. If negative, and there continues to be no other pathogen that is identified, then you may want to consider treatment with metronidazole. Other medications to consider are furazolidone, trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole (TMP-SMX), quinacrine and pentamidine. You may want to discuss these options with your personal physician.
Followup with your personal physician is essential.

Hi all,
I live in Canada and I was just diagnosed with this little Parasite twice now. Once 2 years ago and Just this last week again. I treated the Blastocystis Hominis With the Help of a Naturalpath Two Years ago but it never really seemed to go away. I am now on 3 Tablets 250 MG of Flaggl for 30 days. The only way I can keep the Flaggl Down is take it with some Olive Oil first after eating some food otherwise I vomit. The Olive oil bit was recommended to me by the pharmacist and it works like a charm.
I have talked to other people in my community who had bad Guts and all were told you have IBS just like myself. All the people i have talked to have talked about Stomach Cramps and feeling like **** from drinking the Tap water here.
Yet I My body leads more to the Constipation side of things. When I try to add more Fiber to my diet plus Metamucil like all the Doctors Recommend I get Diarrhea where I live in the bathroom. I had a Scope in Dec 2000 and my colon came healthy other than a few Hemorrhoids that were small. I don't have a weakened Immune System because I have had all the tests and they came back negative!I have had problems with Candida before in my bowel because it smells like I'm making Bread its that yeasty!I have been working hard on Cuttng Sugar out of my Diet, I know I'm allergic to Wheat, Wheat Gluten, Chicken Eggs, Dairy, Sugar which I found out from the Naturalpath and when I avoid those I feel somewhat better.
I am not Drinking the Tap water, We get Bottled Water delivered.
Hopefully this can all be resolved for my guts but if not there is some new stuff on the market for IBS at the local health food I may try and I'm going to ask the Doctor if I can have another scope done because since starting the Flaggl 2 days ago I have been having several bowel movements a day and some pink mucuos after which concerns me.
hi i was just looking for any infomation in relation to natural treatment for blastocystis hominis. My mother who is 42 has recently found out she has this infection. My mum has had this infection for about 2 years and didnt realise it she was just advised it was abug until recently a doctor tock it a bit further, im looking for possible natural treatments and any advise would be greatly apreciated. My mother for the past 2 years has been recieving pains in her legs, she has also been getting dizzy and thinks things are moving when there not. She also finds it difficult to walk up stairs to bed and will sometimes just sleep on the coach. im not really sure what to do but i have been reading about drugs and would like to try a natural remedy. its also very rare in astralia so natural therapists havent heard of it, any advise would be greatly appreciated
l;m new to this, and a little confused about it all.but up on the board l noticed somone said somthing about a naturel way of treatment..if anyone knows of this can they please tell me..Rayls
Diagnosed today with Blastocystis hominis,
and apparently there are some natural remedies which might be more successful than the usual antibiotics.
Anybody interested? (bluewaterman?)
Thanks for the input, Kevin MD, will follow up with my general physician.
Thank you for the response. Will follow up with the suggestions to my GP. I am reluctant to go the Flagyl use due to reports of possible resistance noticed by previous studies ( I assume that in many other countries, such as Thailand, where people can just walk into a pharmacy they treat their bowel/blood in stool symptoms with Flagyl. Hence the observed resistance to the drug in certain case studies). I am hoping my GP will go with nitazoxanide, after another broader spectrum stool sample test. To try and reduce doubt as to the pathogen.
I have no experience of your particular problem I just looked up the bug on Medline out of interest, I would say that many who host a long term gut infection have duel-infections sometimes with fungi ,If you need any more info on that, post..

We report a case of a patient with AIDS and severe immunosuppression who developed diarrhea due to a vacuolar stage of Blastocystis hominis. The patient was treated with nitazoxanide, a 5-nitrothiazole broad-spectrum antiparasitic agent. We obtained complete remission of symptoms and eradication of the parasite. Nitazoxanide is a new treatment option for blastocystosis in AIDS patients. Further studies to test its efficacy are needed.

Please understand that for a wide majority of patients erradication of blastocys.Hom., there is no improvement in sypmtoms. I am not saying it would not be worth treating (I would simply use the flagyl regimen, saving the big guns for if your stools were positive again after treatment). One must look at other diagosises (such as non-infections, inflammation, Irritable bowel, colon cancer..etc). Futher stool tests and a scope to examine the colon (either partially or fully based on your age) may be persued. If the infection is clear and your symtoms persist, bulking agents to help regulate the consistancy and frequency of the bowel movement may be helpful.
