bumps and pains

for a few months now i've had this bump immediately to the right of my bellybutton. i thought it was just a muscle at first so i ignored it.  then it started to get tender, mostly when i wore tighter pants but sometimes for no reason.  about a month into this, i started getting pains in my abdomen.  it was like pressure all around the center of my belly.  my stomach always looks and feels swollen and the pain is like dull and constant but sometimes sharp like a knife. sometimes i can feel the pain wrap around to my back.  i also feel tired and drained all the time.  the first doctor i saw thought maybe my aorta was on the wrong side of my body so he ordered an ultrasound.  it showed i had an elongated gall bladder but the doc said it shouldn't be a concern (should it be??) but my aorta was in the right spot.  second doctor i saw ordered a CT scan of my abdomen and pelvis with attention to my abdominis rectus muscle.  still came back normal.  now the doctor says to call if it hurts me again.  this is the second time i've been dismissed because they don't know what's wrong with me.  i have a feeling it's not about my muscle but something else.  it seems that we all have the same symptoms but no one can diagnose us.  any help would be very much appreciated.

so i'm not the only one with this bump?  i still have it, it's getting close to a year now that it's been with me.  i've noticed that some days it's very uncomfortable to sit down, especially on the train on my way home.  i've been to the dr recently and each time i go she feels around on my stomach and asks how it is.  so i always tell her that it's still tender and that it still bothers me if there's any kind of pressure on it. but she never seems concerned.  should i be concerned that she's not or should i trust her judgement and just let this bump hang out with me? i can't understand what it could be.  the only sort-of explanation i've received is that "maybe it's a muscle that overgrew on one side".  how legit does that sound??  i was told the only way to figure out what is really is would be if they opened me up and actually looked inside.  i feel like i'm getting the run-around here.  it's gotten to the point where when i lay in bed at night my boyfriend can't put his arm over me if (if it crosses my stomach) because i get this pressurey pinchy feeling.  i'm tired of feeling like this, like at any time something bad could happen because no one knows for sure what's inside of me.
you guys, this is something.  why the doctors don't know what it is and why they're not more agressive in figuring it out is beyond me.  what can we do??  has any one gotten any thing close to a diagnosis about this???

Hello all.  I too have had this mysterious bump, which is tender to touch, and the "undulations".  I feel movement in my abdomen, and am not pregnant, but was told by my doctor that it is just gas.

I am a 37 year old female and I actually am not sure if I'm suppose to be asking this specific question on this website but I am hoping you could or refer me somewhere else.  Now the question I am asking is 'I been getting very bad burning sensations in my head.  I also get very angry and upset at just about anything so I like to know what could be causing those symptoms I just mentioned.

I have a bump about 5" over and 1" down from my navel which is very tender and sore.It feels like its about 1/4" diameter X
1" long.My doctor thinks it is fatty tissue.Tight pants bother me also.An X-Ray,Bariun Enema, and CT Scan all have come up normal but they cant find out what causes my pain.I thought i might have appendicitis because of the location, but i have none of the obvious symptoms. My pain is just below and just above the upper and lower right quadrant defining line.I recently quit smoking and gained about 15 pounds in 2-3 months...could that have something to do with it?I also recently (within 2 months) started taking a calcium channel blocker for high blood pressure.

okay, today is july 24th.  i originally posted this question on april 11th.  that was 3 1/2 months ago!  although i am feeling a bit better now, it still wouldn've been nice to have a doctor's opinion.  i can say that i will no longer be visiting this site as it has become as discouraging as visiting my real-live doctor.

It's really upsetting when for the last few months I have tried to post a question and it keeps telling me "new questions can't be answered for a few days, check back in a few days." These "few days" turned into months! I think they could've posted an explaination like they do in the other forums when questions can't be answered. I once thought this site was the best and most informative in cyberspace, they really had a good thing going. I also thought it was wonderful that doctors are generously giving of their time to help people, instead of the "out to make a buck and cut costs at the cost of the patient" attitude. By the time they realize they've lost all their visitors on this site, it will be too late. Someone else wanting to create a similar website will see their failure as an opportunity.

Surf around, I've seen MANY forums such as this although some of them don't have doctors answering questions, it's just talking with other people. (Why can't they do that with this forum?! So little time and effort it would take.) If you have the money to spend and are looking for a diagnosis, check out www.cyberdocs.com/

I CAN'T BELIEVE THIS!  WHEN I LOOK AT THE OTHER FORUMS ON THIS SITE, I SEE THE DOCTORS ANSWER THE QUESTIONS IN LESS THAN A DAY!  I STILL HAVEN'T GOTTEN AN ANSWER FROM THE DOCTOR AND I POSTED THIS QUESTION OVER TWO MONTHS AGO!  I THINK WE SHOULD ALL FIND ANOTHER FORUM TO POST ON.  IF I FIND A GOOD ONE, I'LL LET YOU ALL KNOW!

undulations?  is that what it's called when you see your insides moving around from the outside?  i think i have that too.  i can't tell if it's the way i'm breathing or if it really is my insides...  i had thought about parasites and worms since i worked at an animal shelter and had a high risk of being infected.  however, the very thought of having a parasite inside me scares me enough to  not want to know.  it's also slightly embarassing i think to go to your doctor and find out you have worms like a cat or dog.  yuo write that you used herbal cleansing?  maybe you could provide me with some info regarding the products you used and the ways you used them.  also, you say you were taking digestive enzymes...  was this for the undulations or something else?  and one more question (sorry!)  do you have any pain associated with your "condition" like pressure or bloating or lots of rumbly gas noises inside?  i have tried so many things and yet i have been having no luck.  it's gotten to the point where i can't go the doctor anymore because i've missed way too much work and the dr doesn't have weekend appointments.  i'm frustrated and disappointed - any info would be helpful!  hope all is well with you...

I am new to this discussion. For over 7 years I've dealt with something in my upper right quadrant of abdomen. I actually saw undulations there (like a pregnant woman sees when with child!) when lying flat in tub. I had taken digestive enzymes for 3 months prior.
I hear no mention in any of these discussions of the possible role of parasites. There are such things as worms in cysts in the liver or scolex (tape worm heads) tenaciously hooked in (literally) to the digestive wall in upper to mid small intestine . I took serious herbal cleanse & saw many things, the largest of which passed from me was 5" long, 1/2" diameter!
The HMO provider & gastro dr (after getting my records) wrote that I refused to see a psychologist so they refused to refer me to an infectious disease specialist. Now I am concerned if this is a worm or a polyp or something in that area. I came out clean with signoid, barium enema & basic sonogram. What else can we do?
My point is look up parasites & ask your doctor. Unfortunately, I don't have much faith in formal medicine. When I drew what came out of me, they thought I had delusions! and didn't tell me, of course.

Erin,
I told you in my last post that I had mild colitis.  Apparently, I was too strung out on the demerol to hear what the dr said the other day.  I took the time to read the paper that the dr gave me with a picture of my colon and it says extreme edema on the right side of my colon.  I am having a hard time finding info on this so I am not sure exactly what it is yet.  If I find anything I will let you know.
Have you called your dr yet?

donna,
you get the bump??  does it get tender sometimes?  mine is right next to my bellybutton on my right side.  somedays it looks smaller than others but maybe that has to do with the bloating, etc.  i used to drink a lot of soda but i've cut down substantially in the past few moths cos i thought it was the carbonation making me feel sick.  i'm going to make a list of all the suggestions i've gotten and take them to my doctor.  maybe if she gets a hint she can fix me.  is your bump always there?  mine never goes away and sometimes it;s tender.  the doctor is so interested by it yet won't take the time to figure out what it is.  how can this make any sense??  let me know if you can think of anything else that might help.  thanks so much,
erin :)

Hi Erin,

This could be totally unrelated, but I get a  bump like you describe when I have too much caffeine.  I am pretty sure it is a swollen gland, as you have glands in your abdomen.

Caffeine does a lot of weird things to me....like sore throat, ear infection, swollen glands, bloating, chest/stomach pain, bladder infections, etc.

If you ingest a lot of caffeine, take a break from it entirely and see if this helps.

You never know--sometimes the culprit is something simple!

i'm so glad you got a diagnosis!  let's hope now that the treatment works for you.  is colitis something that clears up eventually?  i'll have to do some reading up on it.  was the test painful or just unconfortable?  i'd like to know what i'm in for!  i'm so nervous to go the doctor and have to endure embarassing tests!  this week has been pretty bad. i've had pains in my belly and under my ribs all week. is that anything you experienced? i am so tired of this!!!  i think i will call the doctor again soon.  thank you for your support and info, it's all very helpful.  take care and keep me posted on how your treatment is going.

Well, I survived the colonoscopy, but it was not easy!  The demerol did not work and I felt the whole thing!!  NOT a pleasant experience.  But, now I know what is causing that nagging pain.  I have mild colitis on the right side of my colon. So, now hopefully the medicine he gave me will get rid of it and I can go on with my life. (i really hope it is that easy)  So, the point is, you should probably check with your doctor about the possibility of colitis.  Of all the things that I have read, my symptoms did not match colitis, but I am living proof that every person is different.  So, it is worth a shot, right?
Good luck and let me know how you are doing.

hi christine,
i'm not sure about endometriosis but i will definitely look into it.  anything to stop this nagging ache in my stomach, ya know?  i had a gyno exam by my pcp and she said everything was okay.  is it possible that she could have missed something seeing as how she's not a gyno but just a regular doctor?  thanks for your suggestions and support.  i'll keep posting - we've got to stick together since the doctors don't care.

Have you looked into endometriosis? It can cause the symptoms you describe. Instead of a GI doc, you might want to go to a gynecologist for evaluation. Good luck to you.

becky,
i am so glad i'm not the only one with this mysterious bump.  i have been dismissed by two doctors so far which is becoming very discouraging.  we can't let the doctors keep us down.  they have a job to do and i've decided i'm going to make them earn those fancy cars they drive around in.  ;)
anyway, i had a good week last week but this week i've been feeling very gross inside.  it started out as just some pressure and fullness like usual but the past couple days have been worse.  last night in the middle of the night i woke up feeling so naeusous (sp?) i couldn't even roll over.  all i could do was lay in bed till it passed.  today my stomach is very pinchy feeling and bloated--i'm wearing my sweatpants to work today (not a good impression for a receptionist but it makes me feel better).  i hate feeling this way.  sitting hurts, standing hurts, laying down hurts.  sometimes all i can do is pull my knees up to my chest cos for some reason the pressure almost makes it feel better.  ugh!!!!!
please let me know if you find anything out and let me know how the test goes.  i want to know what i'm in for if this doesn't get better.  don't let the doctors dismiss you or tell you it's in your head.  as for the gastro, i will check into it.  someone's gotta have an answer for us somewhere.  good luck with your test and stay strong.  try not to let this get the best of you.

Erin,
I was very surprised to read your post.  Your symptoms seem so much like mine.  I have had a pain about 2" to the right and 1" below my belly button for about 2 years now.  I do not have a knot there but my stomach is always bloated and very tender.  I can not wear anything that puts pressure on my stomach.
Have you seen a gastroenterologist?  I have a lot of stomach problems (gastritis, GERD and hiatal hernia) so I see a gastro dr on a regular basis.  I am scheduled to have a colonoscopy on April 25 so I will let you know what I find out.  If you find out anything new will you please let me know?  If you want to talk more about this you can email me at ***@****
Good luck
