elevated liver enzyme

My husband, who is 35, just got a physical with blood tests
taken. The results showed he has an elevated liver enzyme.
The nurse said it was "no big deal" that he must drink every
now and again. Well, I feel my husband drinks a lot, and the
reason he got the physical done is because I thought he was
drinking much more, and with that came symptoms of cramping,
cold sweats, headaches, and nauseation. These symptoms were
happening when he wasn't drinking. Now he says  he can't
drink beer anymore because he has been feeling really sick when
he drinks it. Now he has switched to the hard stuff. I don't know
what an elevated liver enzyme is and neither does he, but since
the nurse blew it off, so has he. His father is an alcoholic
with cirrhosis of the liver, and I'm afaid my husband is headed
in the same direction. Should I be concerned?

I'M 27YRS OLD AND ALSO DRINK ALOT. A YEAR AND A HALF AGO MY ENZYMES WENT THROUGH THE ROOF DUE TO MONO AND MY LIVER BECAME HEPATIC DUE TO THE DRINKING WITH MONO.I HAD TO QUIT DRINKING UNTIL THEY BECAME NORMAL. AFTER 103 DAYS THEY WENT BACK TO NORMAL. SINCE I STARTED DRINKING AGAIN THEY HAVE GONE BACK UP. I ALSO WAS DIAGNOSED WITH HIGH BP AND ONE OF THE SYMPTOMS OF METOPROLOL(MY MEDS), IS HIGH LIVER ENZYMES. I'M IN THIS FORUM HOPING SOMEONE WILL TELL ME OF A BETTER REASON THAN ALCOHOL BUT IN MY CASE IT PROBABLY IS THE BOOZE. HIGH LIVER ENZYMES MEAN YOUR LIVER IS UNDER STRESS. A COUPLE OF FACTORS CAN CAUSE THIS, ALCOHOL BEING ONE OF THEM. GO ONTO A SEARCH ENGINE AND PUNCH IN LIVER ENZYMES. IT'LL BRING UP SOME GOOD STUFF. MY ULTRASOUNDS WERE FINE A YEAR AGO AND ARE FINE NOW. LONG TERM DAMAGE IS THE ONLY THING DOCTORS WILL TELL YOU. IT IS AWFULLY HARD TO MAKE LIFESTYLE CHANGES WHEN YOU FEEL 100 PERCENT. GOOD LUCK.

Thank you for being honest about drinking too much.  I can NOW understand why my liver enzyme is elevated because I also drink to much, but was never asked that question.  My doctors' nurse made a simliar statement to me "slightly elevated" "have it re-checked in a month" but with no information of what, why or how I could lower it.  How about it's time for you to change your lifestyle!
