Hey Boo:
Our friends who have posted above are right on target. The anxiety of anticipating the endoscopy is worse than the procedure itself. I've had about a dozen of them. Some times I was out completely, sometimes in a twilight state. The last one I had they gave me IVs of versed, demerol, and valium, plus the spray to numb the back of your throat. If you are a product of the 1960's, you may even enjoy the drugs!!
Just tell your gastroenterologist that you don't want to remember the procedure. They'll know how much IV medication to give to get you there.
Good luck with the RESULTS of the test. Getting a good report back is the most important thing.
Best regards,

I was completely out for both of mine. The first time i had one done I did wake up during the middle of it gagging, but it wasn't bad at all. The 2nd one they didn't even spray my throat and I was fine, my throat wasn't even sore afterwards. The best thing you can do is relax, Good Luck
It's no big deal. The drugs they give you really make you loopy and you don't know what's really going on. I gagged but no biggie. Just relax and it's over before you know it. Seriously--10 mins max.
Also, they will probably biopsie your stomach for the H.Pylori bacteria. They do that when they are doing the endoscopy.
I've had several of these kinds of things and they do numb the back of your throat and then give you enough medication to have a conscious sedation. which is you might be able to feel a little bit of it, but you are out of it enough that you really don't care. You will wake up and probably not remember any of it. On mine they used valium and demerol. I was out like a light. But if they do choose to use Verced then you probably won't recall any of it, if they use enough. But really it's not a bad thing. You might have a sore throat and not be able to sing for about a week or six, but it's very quick and a good way to catch a good snooze. 8-) Chad
I just had an endoscopy. It really isn't much to it. They spray this stuff on the back of your throat to numb the gagging reflex. They wait for that to kick in and then they give you some pain medication (they did me), then some other medicine. It was called Vercid. I was pretty much out of it. I wasn't even uncomfortable at all that night. It really is a pretty simple procedure. Good Luck!
