My dog is about 1 year old. He is not neuterd. He gets really happy when you pet him or you show him the leach and he urinates on the floor. It is getting frustrating ! Its the only thing that gets annoying, other than that he is a great dog. What can I do? Some people say that getting him neutered would help that problem, Is that true?

Thanks,
EGGY

We had a dog that had what was described as having self-confidence issues, or being too submissive, when she was a puppy. It was recommended that we do basic obedience training with her and it really did help with her confidence. At first, I didn't understand the connection, how does obedience training help a dog gain confidence? Then I realized it was a way for us to communicate with her in a way she could understand. When she understood what was expected of her and got praise for doing it, she sat prouder, calmer, and turned out to be an excellent specimen of her breed- German Shepherd. The piddling stopped too.

Any dog that is not intended to be bred by a licensed, responsible breeder should be neutered (or spayed if female).  Males in particular make much more easy going pets if they are altered. It also completely removes the risk of testicular cancer.

It sounds like the urinating he's doing is as a sign of submission to you.  Have you ever taken any obedience classes with him?  That would be a big help to both.  Training is actually more about teaching humans how to understand their dogs' behavior.

It would also be a good idea to have your vet examine him and run a simple urine test.  If he has a urinary tract infection he may not be abe to help releasing his urine.  Antibiotics will take care of that problem.
