No, I didn't state that pet stores don't sell great foods.....I said you need to find a speciality store, small business, that have your dogs best interest at heart! There are many, but you will have to look.....Everything they sell will be the top of the line!

What I stated was that Grocery stores & discount centers sell CRAP! These foods will eventually kill your dog....I also listed that there were a few good brands to be found at chain petstores! Actually, there are quite a few.....

Now, whatever your Vet sells will not be what your dog needs....They sell this trash because they make money by doing so.....They get kick-backs from the company which interestingly is also who funded their limited course (6-8 hrs) on nutrition in Vet school.....

Here's an example of how a label of food will read from your Vet:

Ingredients: Whole grain corn, chicken by-product meal, soybean meal, animal fat (preserved with mixed tocopherols and citric acid), soybean oil, chicken liver flavor, lactic acid, flaxseed, iodized salt, dried chicken cartilage, choline chloride, vitamins (l-ascorbyl-2-polyphosphate (source of vitamin C), vitamin E supplement, niacin, thiamine mononitrate, vitamin A, etc.  ****There was more, but not important here....

The first 10 ingredients are the most important.....This food (Above) has no protein in it....The bulk is CORN (Used as a cheap filler, causes allergies & has very little nutritional value) and BY-PRODUCTS (Which are the unsavory leftovers NOT fit for human consumption!) This is almost as bad as Beneful! Notice, I said almost! Do you see anything in this that YOU would want to eat? If not, then your dog shouldn't eat it either....

Now, here's an example of a GREAT food ingredient list: (Read the list)

Ingredients: Chicken meal, turkey meal, salmon meal, de-boned chicken, de-boned turkey, de-boned trout, potatoes, peas, tapioca, lentil beans, chickpeas, chicken fat (preserved with mixed tocopherols), natural chicken flavour, whole dried egg, apples, duck meal, herring meal, salmon oil, alfalfa, de-boned duck, de-boned salmon, sweet potatoes, canola oil (preserved with mixed tocopherols), coconut oil (preserved with mixed tocopherols), flaxseed, potassium chloride, pumpkin, carrots, bananas, blueberries, cranberries, broccoli, spinach, alfalfa sprouts, blackberries, squash, papayas, pomegranate, dried chicory root, dried Lactobacillus acidophilus fermentation product, dried Enterococcus faecium fermentation product, dried Aspergillus niger fermentation product, dried Aspergillus oryzae fermentation product, vitamins (vitamin A supplement, ETC....

Doesn't that sound better? The first 6 ingredients are named protein sources (MEAT)... So, the bulk of this food is what a animal should eat! MEAT! Notice, this product also has 3 different strains of Probiotics added....This is a GREAT FOOD & there are many more just like it......

It sounds as if you've already given up......The medication your requesting works because it's a Steroid mixed with an anti-histamine.....Steroids work, but only mask the real problem......They are extremely helpful for short term use to ease an animals/or humans suffering.....ANd yes, I agree to their use , that is only until the problem can be resolved with another approach.......

Your "Diezel" should live to 18-20,  NOT 12-14......Interesting what Cheap, unhealthy, dry food is doing to the species!    Karla

One unexpected source (to me) of quality dog food is Tractor Supply.  I purchased "A Taste of the Wild" kibble in Salmon/Potato (again) and this one carries a 4.5 star on the Advisor.  I am also tying a 4Health (TS brand) canned dog food as an adder.  It is the only canned dog food I've found that is fish (not chicken, beef, lamb...).

I'm still fighting finding the source of allergies.  I have finally limited my Westie's diet to fish/veg/no-grain and no table scraps.   He seems to be improving, more time needed to determine. These are not simple problems.

ok i misread about where to buy the food. sorry, i will look, my concern is that... everything that is put in food, limited ones, and hypoallergetic Diezel is allergic too, so i'm still putting in him the things he's allergic too.... seems to be a no win situation, even the stuff i have checking online, home made foods for dogs with allergies, has everything he is allergic too, we just feel so bad for him.... were hoping this new vet on monday can shed some light for us..... we just want the little guy to be happy!!

Hi Jerry yes Diezel is his name, he got his name from his first car ride, it was in a Jetta ( Diesal gas of course lol ) but we wanted to spell it differnt so we used a Z..... the Venyctal P is a pill, anti inflammatory anti itch , with long term use there can be some side effects ( as i have read and vet told me ) but Diezel is a senior now, Shih Tzu's only have a 12-14 year life span, so we are going to take the chance and put him back on it, we would rather he live out the rest of his life happy and itch free then the way he is, seriously we call him our little Zombie Dog , looks like one and smells like a zombie LOL but we love him dearly............... i hope the best for your Westie, I have always heard the Pure Breeds have more health issues then mixed ones, i'm starting to believe this!

I'm really here mostly to learn, but I do have a question.  You said:  "Diezel be put back on the Venyctal P... that seems to be the " only " thing that cleared him up... don't know what else to do."  Diezel your dog's name?  Sorry if it was already stated and I forgot already.  Venyctal P.. i what, a medication/shot?

I the case of my Westie I am trying to find the right diet, and trying not to engage in the high cost of specialist in veterinarian medicine.

I know the Westie breeder/shower and rescuer we adopted our dog from has less than full confidence even in her long time vet.  Of course, she has all surgery and tests run by a licensed vet, but she has her own (shared among breeders,  I think) views on food and skin problems in Westies... saying the vet doesn't understand, is that possible, seems a popular view among dog people.

Just curious, if the vet food is not good and the pet store food is not good, what is the alternative? I'm going to see a vet dermatologist vet in a couple weeks... what if they try sell me " yet more food " I'm in Canada... so I don't know what we have here i know the US has more brands then we do.. as I understand from friends... I'm going to request that Diezel be put back on the Venyctal P... that seems to be the " only " thing that cleared him up... don't know what else to do... :-(

Karla, thanks, I and others read along to learn.  So, your generous efforts here are multiplied by being read by many.  As a CL on the Heart Rhythm Community I have asked the MedHelp staff for a "peg count" on posts so that we can all see how many people have read.  This request assumed just a cumulative count, not a count per reply, still it would give us a quantitative feel for how widely the thread has been read.

I too will look for one of the quality can food, but our Westie has very discriminating taste - yes, he will even refuse much table food - I do occaionaly give him small strips of white roast chicken meat.  Being a small dog is another getting used to, a very small piece will cause him to take it to a favorite picknick area   (like the rug in the foyer) to have a feast.  He is my first Terrier, and boy, what an experience.

I will try today to make desktop copies of your advice above and a couple the ones you provided to my posts.  I am sure I will refer to them when I have a question, and some of your advice may creep into my replies to others.  I'll try not to be guilty of plagiarism : )   Mimicking is form of respect.

This could have been put in a private message, but I decided to complement/thank in public post.

hi karla, wow that is a lot of very good information, we did give him the omega stuff for a coupl emonths, but it didnt help, benedril also did not help when we gave it to him.... never thought about the canned food, we will try that, i'll ask my vet what they have there. He does only get the rabies shot every 3 years, both our dogs do... our female is 7 yrs, no problems at all, our boys started at 5 years old... funny you say to stop vaccinating them, we want to, but the vet will not sell us the ( and i remember the name now ) Revelution unless they are Heartwormed tested and vaccinated... so we don't know what to do?? I just got off th ephone from yet " another" vet office, we are going in a couple weeks, we will try this one out see what they say.. thanks so much for all the wonderful advice and links, I will keep you posted!!!

Hello...I'm going to answer as best I can, but it may not be in order...Sometimes my brain works differently than my typing...

Your problem began with feeding the Beneful.... It's one of the 2 lowest of the low quality dogfoods on the market! I have counted 13 ingredients that either cause allergies, cancer, live & kidney damage....It's full of dyes & poison chemicals.....This is why your dog is ill! He received absolutely No nutrition from this one....

You state you've tried many foods, but without names, I cannot comment on them....If they too were grocery store or discount center brands, then they also rate almost as low....

Regular Natural Balance is a good food. I personally think it's still too carb heavy for a healthy food,  but their limited ingredient diets are of lower quality.....Knocking them down to maybe a 3 star food out of 5. The one you feed is basically sweet potatoes & NO protein.....A Named protein should always be the first ingredient on a dogfood ingredient list.....Grain free does not necessarily mean that it's not full of carbohydrates...Carbs turn to sugar in the system and feed yeast...Be careful with that! All dogs need high quality protein and I feel that's where most mistakes begin......

Your dog has a struggling immune system and has no way to make a rebound without any proper nutrition.....All the products (Medications) you have listed are designed to suppress the allergic response by suppressing the immune system reaction.....Some are very dangerous!

From the best I can tell, your dog needs some real food to heal himself...At 10 years old, you are running out of time to do this right.....

DO NOT feed this or any dog any more kibble....They are not designed to eat cereal every meal, every day, for life any more than we would want to be fed that way...Kibble is a convenience food....It is baked to death and with the baking goes most of the nutrition.....

ALL dogs need moisture rich diets....Especially, skin disease dogs! A state of dehydration is not only damaging the skin, but also the internal organs.....

Your dog needs to be on a HIGH Quality CANNED diet...These brands will NOT come from a grocery store or discount center.....You are defeating your purpose by making dogs eat their kinds of foods....Petco sells a few incredible foods and ALL mom & pop speciality stores will sell the best.....There are many small private shops that will carry ONLY what your dog needs.....Your just going to have to locate them....Petsmart has a couple, but not worth the trip.....

Canned foods are much more nutritious because they are not baked at such extreme temps. as kibble....Plus, they are full of moisture & moisture is the key to health......Here is a list to choose from.. These are the best of the best canned foods! Here they are:

http://www.dogfoodadvisor.com/dog-food-reviews/wet/5-star/

If you are using a anti-fungal shampoo, that what you need.....Dandruff shampoos for humans are not for fungus, but for bacteria...These are 2 different things......If you are indeed using the shampoo that Jerry speaks of, then it's fine.....Shampoo as needed, but no more often than every 2 weeks or your stripping the vital oils your dog's skin needs.....

You need to add a good probiotic to your dog's diet for at least 3 months to kill yeast in the digestive system which then will help with the external problems...You must start inside to heal the outside.....An easy one to find can be purchased at Wal-mart or Wal-greens...Called "PEARL" probiotics....They are found in the human supplement section....Come in a box of 30...Give him 1 @ day...If constipation occurs, cut back to every other day or every 3 days.....A healthy digestive system is your first line of defense...

Next, DO NOT ever vaccinate him again,....He's had way too many & that's part of the problem....A 12 year old dog should not be Vaccinated. If your using a Vet that chooses to vaccinate yearly, then you need a new vet.....Vaccines damage the immune system and they are killing him! In a young dog, every 3 years is more than enough...After the age of 8 or 9, I consider it malpractice on a Vet's part.....Your Vet knows that the Rabies Vaccine lasts at least 5 years or longer, and the others last at least that long if not indefinately, yet keeps putting more in your fur-kid...This is all about money and it's got to stop...Your dog does need a yearly checkup and at age of 10, you really need to have a full blood panel run to check his internal functions.....Next time you see your vet, ask him/her which rabies vaccine they are giving your dog.....The rabies vaccine is a standard 3 YEARS and your Vet knows it! Please, Check out:  Truth4Dogs.com to explain the dangers of vaccines.....

I also think an Omega 3 Fatty acid is vital for skin (And everything else) health...They can be purchased many places.....

OK, I think that's it.....When your dog is miserable, you can give him OTC Benadryl on occasion....The dose is 1mg. per lb. every 6-8 hours....Remember though that this is an antihistamine and will cause drying....I would only use it when vital......Let me know how it's going.....You should notice a difference in 2-3 weeks.....Good luck, Karla

P.S. Here is another link I want you to read...It will explain why Beneful (And this applies to all grocery store brands) should not be fed....Just so you can see it in writing....here it is:

While we zero in on the facts, please consider dog food that clearly states "grain free" is my first suggestion.  Better to if it says something along the line of "limited ingredients" hope that means they don't put in the food everything they sweep off the floor.

My Westie is very sensitive, history of yeast problems. we always use a dog shampoo labeled medicated and containing at least 1% Ketoconazole (sp?), this is specifically for yeast, but may be good for other skin problems.

We are currently feeding a sweet potato and fish formula grain free, limited ingredients, by Natural Balance, kibble.  I'd like to be able to add some chicken broth or other "taste good" stuff but we are still trying to identify what/if food alergies he may have.

yes, they did a scraping on his chest, came back with some yeast in it, they told me to use the Vet Skin and Coat shampoo, or to use dandruff shampoo for humans, he has had several differnt kibble foods.... you know the old, trial and error to see what hes allergic to bit.... but now he's on I think it's called Natures Best hubby buys it... he was also on Venyco P, a pill, i'm probably spelling it wrong, but that was the pill tat cleared him up then they took him off it cause said it could cause more problems if used long term... he gets his Vaccs once a year, in April, he has had blood test, just for allergies....

Oops, Forgot something? Has your guy ever had a Skin scrape (From the Vet) to check for skin parasites such as Mange or fungus? This should have been done FIRST, before everything else.....

And, is ALL of this food been dry food (As in Kibble)? Please, let me know.....Karla

P.S. What is the NAME of the shampoo you use? What is his vaccine schedule? Has he ever had a blood test?  All these questions are important.......Thanks

Hi Karla, ok I'm going to try answer best I can... he is allergic to, white potatoe, duck, peas, grass, trees, ragweed, rice, those are the things i can remember off the list (not have it handy), he was on allergy shots for a year, and on a medication Atopica, and another med that i'm sorry i cant remember the name of, but it was short lived b/c they said could have side effects on his organs, he had a burst of pancratitis a couple years ago, was in vet on IV fluids for 3 days, his chest is bald, the skin there looks flaky red and sore, his paws are losing fur too , and almost looks like elephant skin.... was eating Beneful, now we buy a dog food from pet store that is fish, and he is on hypo allergetic treats from vet, but nothing is working. I hope i covered everything for you... thanks again!!

Welcome.....I'll try to help you...I would need more information such as:

Please, explain "The Severe Allergies"......
What did the allergy tests say he was allergic to?
What medications were tried?
What food is the special diet?
What food has he eaten before the special food? How long has he eaten it? Was it hard or soft food?
What treats does he receive?
How long has this gone on?
Because he's a Senior, Has he ever had a blood panel run? Did it show anything?
Anything else would be helpful.......Thanks, Karla
