AFTER SEIZURE WHY WON'T DOG DRINK?

My 11 yr old dachshund had a seizure a month ago, out of the blue. It lasted 45 seconds- paddling, foaming at the mouth, peed on himself. Afterwards he paced for hours, brought him to the vet for a full blood workup-nothing. Vet gave me valium to administer rectally in case it happened again. 3 weeks later, he had the exact same thing. I gave him the valium & seizure stopped, but he still paced & whined for hours. Last time he seized, he went back to drinking & eating within a day. He even got most of his personality/quirks back. This time we're 3 days out, he's still confused & not acting "normal", he still paces for hours if we don't confine him, won't respond to his name, won't drink water but will take small amounts of food hand-fed only. He seems to be reluctant to put his face in the water bowl, I've tried giving him small amounts with a turkey baster. He seems very confused & his breath is really bad. We've had him tested for diabetes twice-both negative. We had a 15 yr old dog with insulin-dependent diabetes, and he's not acting like he did- this is different. He won't sleep at night & will whine if we put him in his crate, which he used to love sleeping in.He lets us hold him for short periods of time & still loves to lay on our bed with us, he even successfully navigates the doggie steps to climb up there. He seems to be in a fog though, and will not respond to command. No tail wagging or recognition of his favorite people either. He used to lay there & let us scratch his neck, ears, etc. now he just gets up in the middle of it & walks away, and back to wandering. He is still peeing outside only, no accidents so he's still remembering his potty training. He even walks with us when we take walks, slower but still he seems to enjoy it. Why is he not getting better like the last time? Will he eventually improve?

I am so sorry you didn't get any answer before now.

I don't know if he will improve. I don't have any hands-on experience with this kind of thing and am not a vet.

It all depends on what may be causing the seizures. The seizures may be a symptom of something else, as yet undiagnosed.

I would recommend you get a second opinion about his condition. Hopefully if there is something else going on, you will get a proper diagnosis, and may be able to do something.
At the moment, go with the flow. Let him sleep on the bed if being in his crate distresses him. He might not be responding normally to you, but on some level he will definitely be reassured by being with you. He knows you love him.
And if he is still enjoying his walks then that's a good sign.

Very bad breath can be caused by gingivitis (inflammation of the gums) or a tooth or gum infection, and can sometimes be caused by the kidneys not working so well. Most dogs have a bit of "doggy breath" yet are fine and fit. But a really bad smell means something isn't quite right. Blood-work could identify any kidney issues, and a mouth examination could tell quite quickly probably, if he has gum disease.

He may not want to drink water, but have you tried other fluids such as meat stock or something like that -so he is getting liquids?
You are doing a good job I am sure with the turkey baster, but he might drink on his own if it is more tasty and isn't just plain water. So he smells it more as "food" than a drink?
Sometimes if you can "kick-start" a dog to start drinking, the water thing will come back naturally....I don't know, but it's worth a try.
