Accidentally kicked 12 y.o. Shih Tzu in the head! :'(

My 12 year old Shih Tzu was sleeping on the a carpet that he blends in with really well and I was walking past and accidentally stepped on the very edge of his tail. As a reaction, I took a hop to take the weight off my foot but at the same time he snarled and sat up and whipped his head back to look at what was happening and the side of his face and the whole side of my big toe to the ball of my foot connected. I heard an audible "whack!" When I turned around, he was walking but like leaning the opposite direction of the side that got hit and kind of shaking and walking/leaning into the couch. I thought I killed him or he was having a seizure or something. I told him it was an accident and I'm sorry and he sat down but was still shaking a little (like a dog would if they're scared) for a few minutes. He's holding his eye shut on that side and the lower eye lid looks pretty swollen. I iced it as best I could right away but am not sure exactly where he ft hit the hardest. It's been about 45 minutes and he's acting pretty normal so far other than holding his eye mostly shut. He can see with it but it seems sensitive to light. He ate a treat, drank water, is alert, and is walking around ok - seems to be walking straight. I'm just afraid I might have fractured his cheek or jaw (it didn't feel hard enough to break a bone, but I don't know), or hurt his eye ball or that he might go into a coma or have a seizure if his brain swells because he's getting old (though still acting young). I feel horrible. I'm thinking I'll take him to get checked out tomorrow but not sure if this is an ER scenario. What should I do?

I think taking him to the vet is best though he acts young he is 12 and his bones are not as strong as they used to be,

Thank you. Since he was acting normal, I took him to the vet the next morning. His eye was pretty much open all the way by that point. Everything's checked out ok. The vet didn't think there was a need for x-rays based on his exam and my dog's behavior. He had some inflammation in his eye, which I think he already had from allergies and he told us to use Neo Poly Dex drops for that. His eye looks fine now. I think I probably got him primarily in the cheek. I'm so relieved he's ok! Tough little guy.
