Thank you very much for this info. Margot49. Greatly appreciated.
Years ago, when it was the "thing" to give your dogs bones, my patents did that all the time. My Mom gave our 3 Doxies pork chop bones and one of the dogs started passing blood. Vet said it cut up her intestines. She barely survived!
I have had various breed and various size dogs over the years and have fed them raw chicken or turkey necks. I have fed raw beef knuckle bones. I have also had the butcher cut up raw beef bones, different sizes depending on the size of the dog. However, when they start to get dry, I toss them.
I only have one small Chi mix here now and get her the larger size bulky sticks or cow hooves to keep her busy. Again, if they too small or dry, I toss them.
I stopped giving rawhide years ago as was hearing too many stories about blockages.
I'm more concerned about the color of the stool. Light stools indicate a lack of bile, which gives poop its brown color. This situation is a little reminiscent of what happened to my first dog after eating one pork rib bone. He got pancreatitis and it was fatal. Of course, my dog was very old when that happened and his pancreas was probably already twitchy anyway and the bone and fat was just the last straw. It's something you need to be aware of though for future reference. If your dog starts vomiting and refuses food and water, then see your vet. For now, stick with his regular dog food diet and no Thanksgiving extras until this is sorted out.
Margot makes a great point about the plain canned pumpkin for constipation. It's kind of like Metamucil for dogs and they usually love it. Just mix a spoonful or so into his food daily and see how he does.
It is most likely from the bones and/or rawhide.
You should never feed your dogs cooked bones!! Even a lot of rawhide can cause a problem.
Make sure he is drinking water and just try giving him a soft diet. You could try some canned pumpkin, boiled chicken and rice. If it continues, he seems to be straining or you see blood or mucus, get a Vet check and take a stool sample in.
Please, no more bones!!
