Cotrimoxazole for pup's diarrhea?

I have a month and a half old rottweiler puppy, he's been having diarrhea ( stringy brown mucous stools) which started later this morning. My mom asked her friend about what meds to give to the pup and her friende told her to give the pup "cotrimoxazole" is it safe for the puppy? ...I gave the pup this med awhile ago, should I panic if the diarrhea doesn't stop?

Hello & welcome......Clotrimazole is an Anti-Fungal Medication....It will DO NOTHING for Diarrhea....It would be dangerous to use this on a puppy.....Anti-Fungals are VERY strong medications!!!

Please, get your Puppy to a Vet to determine the cause of his digestive upset....Your Vet will be able to tell if it's an illness, Infection, or Parasite.....Don't wait too long as puppies can get dehydrated quickly.....It can also be fatal.....

Your best bet is to have your Puppy evaluated ASAP before he gets worse.....Good luck and let us know what the Vet says.......Karla

I had to look that up but thought it was a sulfa drug.
Was this a litter of pups you had at your house, if not, that is pup is really too young to be away from it's mother. Aside from that, those symptoms could be from any number of things.  Perhaps the person that advised you mother on the use of this med has experience with it in young puppies. I really do not.  There are other medications and diets I have used for young puppies with diarrhea problems but I also go on the advice of my Vet.  I really do think you should take this pup in for  a check up and take a fresh stool sample in also.  That is the safest thing to do and ask the Vet if it is safe to give this med.
Hope your puppy is going to be okay.
