Coughing Rotti

Why would our 2 yr old + rotti cough very loudly, like a child with a chest cold, when she ran for a stick this morning?  It was a hard, fast run.  She coughed twice, then it subsided.  She has not done this before.  She was breathing hard.  She has a short snout, and our vet told us when she was 4 mos old that there could be some breathing issues, although nothing major expected.

I have read everything from 'don't worry about it', to 'lung cancer'.  Will contact vet, but would like to hear from anyone who has had similar issues, especially with rottweilers.  [I've become semi-paranoid as we lost our seemingly healthy, not quite 10 yr old rotti boy to bone cancer this past Sept.]

Thanks for the response.  As requested, here is the update:

I spoke with my vet, who felt it was nothing to be concerned with at this time.  The cough isn't constant, and Dixie likes to dig in dirt and eat pine-cones and sticks [which I pry from her mouth when I can].  I was told just to watch her and see if it continues, or if it gets worse.  Otherwise, nothing to be concerned with.  Her check up is due in July, and unless something changes, vet said we can just look into it then.

What is the temperature like where you live?   If it's cold where you live, it could be something as simple as the cold air irritating your dog's bronchial passages.   If it's nice weather, it might be that she swallowed an insect while she WS running.   Keep an eye on her.  If she continues to cough, a visit to the vet will be in order since coughing can have many causes, ranging from something as easy to treat as Canine Cough or as serious as cardiac issues.  I would not panic just yet, there are too many minor things it could be to start to torture yourself at this early stage of the game.  You are obviously on top of things, just be vigilant and if she does it more, take her to the vet.

Please post back and let us know how she is.
