I hear that a dog collar with drops of Geranium essential oil put on it will deter ticks. I can't definitely tell you it works. I tried it once but am unsure. Where we go for walks in the summer, there are some tick-infested areas and some areas not so bad...and it was hard to tell for sure when I tried the Geranium oil, whether my dog didn't get ticks on her because of the oil, or because we hadn't walked in a "hot-spot"...?
But maybe you could try that.
I did stop the garlic. My dog is much better after 3 days !
I've learned my lesson ; "do not fix something what is not broken!"
I will try to deal with ticks when they come.
Thank you
Monika
I would watch it with the garlic. Onions are so toxic for dogs, and garlic is only one step removed, it is so very like onion in many ways. Some dogs seem to be able to handle these garlic supplements, and some don't, and it can cause vomiting if they don't. Even if she has been eating garlic laden food for years, she could have extra sensitivities, or less tolerance as she grows older.
I'm not 100% sure garlic supplements are right for dogs. (yes, they probably work against ticks because the smell of garlic exudes through the skin, so the ticks are put off biting) There seems to be two camps concerning giving dogs garlic: some people say yes, some people say no, it's toxic, and definitely no.
Personally, I wouldn't.
It's time to take your dog in for a vet exam. I would also stop the garlic supplements until you find out exactly what is going on. Crying, pacing, vomiting and lethargy are serious symptoms that something is badly wrong. It's not something to be treated homeopathically, and you need a firm diagnosis as to what is causing the symptoms.
At 14, your husky has lived a VERY long life. Congratulations to you for taking such great care of her that she's live this long. At the same time, she may have one or more organs failing due to her advanced age. You can't make treatment decisions without more information, so make that call to a vet the sooner the better.
