Dog Biting Backside/Tail

My year old Lab keeps biting her backside near her tail and the beginning of her tail. She has now caused sores to form. I put hydorcortisone cream on her to try and relieve the itching. She does not have fleas and the only other thing I can think of that it may be is dry skin. Does anybody know about Labs and their skin types?

Thanks - appreciate all answers.

Laurie

Laurie...This could also be her Anal Glands needing expressed. Drives them crazy till they can get the pressure relieved.  A vet or groomer can do it....... It could also be Flea Allergy Dermatitis. Even, if you don't see the flea, a dog that is allergic (To the saliva) can go into a frenzy with just one bite. It triggers a allergic response that can last for weeks... You will see tiny red pin dots that are the flea bites. Allergies (As Have 2 kids explained) can be treated with medications. If it's her anal sacks, it takes about 3 days after expression, to feel better. Either way, a Vet can determine the difference. Watch out for the sores in that area, they can become infected. Put some OTC antibiotic ointment on them....Good luck and let us know if you have any other questions...Karla

My golden retriever does this due to skin allergies.   If this is the case with your dog the
vet can give her a cortizone shot to help with the itchiness.
