Dog circular hair loss

Hi I just noticed my dog is missing some fur on his back it is round with fur still in the middle, kinda resembles a doughnut. It does not seem to both him and the vet is closed until Monday. What could it be?

I just done the black light test again and it does not glow and the hair around the area does not pull out easy. Also his skin is extremely dry what do mean by omega supplement? Do I buy it already added in his food or is it something else.

Does ringworm always glow under a black light? This does not glow under a black light. Im not sure if I mentioned it but I have 2 dogs and the other dog seems fine. But I have them separated  in case it is contagious

Hello Hoover....I don't feel that it's an emergency either! This can wait till your Vet gets back....What you need to do is have a skin scrape done.....Under a microscope, they will be able to look for Mange mites, bacteria, yeast & under a lamp, check for fungus such as ring worm....I personally am leaning towards ringworm by the looks of your photo, but if there are no cases in your area (Which I have a hard time believing) then so be it!

Treatments will depend on what they find with the scrape......

You might want to google what food your feeding and make sure that is not the culprit......This could be an allergic reaction, also.....If the skin is dry all over, you need to upgrade his food and add an omega 3 sipplement for his skin.....Wet/canned food would help tremendously!!!!

Let me know what you find out...A simple scrape will help your vet determine how to treat....Karla

I called the vet and he is out until monday but his veterinary assistance talked to me for about 30 mins  and i described in detail the hair loss spots. and I found an other spot as we was talking, She said in the many years she has worked there they havent seen a ring worm case in dogs. Then she asked about allergies which I had forgotten all about. He is allergic to certain brands of dog food and 3 weeks ago we bought a different brand when we couldnt find what we have feeding him for the last year.

She doesnt think it is an emergency and If I feel it is they are referring people to a vet in Houlton, which is in Maine and im in New Brunswick and I dont have my passport so I couldnt cross the border.

Hey there....My first thought is a Hot Spot, but you would see weeping & oozing of a sticky liquid!

Next, has he had a vaccine lately between his should blades? If so, it could be a reaction to the vaccine injection....

And last, I'm going with possible Ring Worm.....Yes, I know how to detect them! :) You'll need a black light.....Ring worm will GLOW under a black light....Ringworm is circular and grows from the outside edges....If you look close, there will be some crusty edges and the hair will just pull out easily....They normally have a center spot that looks different...

Of course, this could also be a insect bite, but they normally itch & have an inflamed area....

Can you post us a pic with the size included? That's the best I can do!

Again, back to black light! It serves for other purposes...Every dog or cat household needs one...Know why? Because urine glows too & you can find those pee-pee spots really easy! I'm not making this stuff up!!!!  :)  Karla
