Dog itchy since going to the groomers

I brought my dog to the groomers a week ago and he came back scratching. I don't get him shaved but rather a scissor cut. He is a Yorkshire Terrier. He always scratches for a day or so when he gets back so i didn't think much of it but now a week later he is leaving pieces of hair around the house from scratching so much and I can see he is not comfortable. There are no hot spots yet and no fleas i keep checking. Thinking maybe it was the shampoo. i tried a new salon this time. My question. Do you think this will clear up on its own or does he need to go to the vet for some kind of pill to stop the itching I guess ?

Hi Joe...This has happened to one of my dogs before......Ever since then, I take my own shampoo to the groomers with me.....I have them use mine instead of theirs.....Just in case it's a reaction to whatever they wash him in.......Karla

P.S. Sometimes groomers will apply a smelly spray on the dog before they are sent home....It's strongly scented, so you would be able to smell it.....I don't allow that on any of mine either.....You might check with the groomer and ask what they used......

my groomer uses Critter Oil  its not a really bad smell  but it helps with a shiny coat and also is used on horses, and other animals to keep flies etc off them.  I even bought it myself.

Hi Joe Always have some Malaseb medicated shampoo on hand it is wonderful for so many things it antibacterial, antifungal and antipruritic. It is very soothing.
My Clumbers often get ear probs  red and itchy as ears covered all the time and costing me a fortune in  fungal   ear ointment but all I do now is rinse inside their ears with Malaseb ....prob solved and I tell you thier ears were itchy drove them crazy so your   dogs prob would I think would respond being washed in it.
My Vet told me to try it as I was complaing about those tiny little tubes. Barely enough for one treatment.
Malaseb lasts ages.hope this helps.

went to the vet on tuesday and he got some anti itch pills and viaderm cream. Not sure if it was the groomer or seasonal allergies. Next year I need to make sure not to get him groomed at the end of August.
