Dog stopped eating, has diaherra, and throws up

Has anyone's pet dog have symptoms of.....diaherra, then throwing up food that was not digested, and then stopped eating all together (even favorite treats, etc.), and then wasnt able to move?  My dog is 10 years old.  A few weeks ago he lost control of his legs, but he was still wagging tail, eating...etc.  We took him to emergency, They had no clue what was wrong.  I thought he was being poisoned by the Metro drug he has been takin for a year for diaherra. He was getting an IV but was still lethargic.  The 2nd or 3rd day he finally stood up, and we got to take him home.  He then had constant diaherra, but was very energitic, eating, just like he always did.  We took him back to the vet because he still had the diaherra 4 weeks later.  We brought him home and vet gave us Tylan powder to give him. He wasnt dehydrated at all.  We sprinkled the tylan powder on his food, but not sure if he got any, cuz he was picking food out of his bowl.  Well that night or the next day he also started to throw up.  And now he was throwing up food that was NOT digested and having diaherra.  Now he stopped eating for 7 days.  Today he barely could walk, went outside and ate some grass.  I took him to vet, and they gave him some fluids and he is going back tomorrow to put a tube inside of him to check his intestines, stomach, esophagus. He has not had a fever through all of this. Right now he is just laying there.

She said if it's a girl call her candy and if it's a boy call him cocoa! Get it Nestle "candy" or  Nestle "cocoa"! Thank you.  I was also hoping for a better outcome....i kinda knew the night before but didnt want to face it. Except for the "stand in" vet we had yesterday, Im starting to feel that many veteranians do not know what they are doing, especially the ones I have been seeing.  $10,000 in the last 2 years and the only answers we got for Nestle was..."could be this", "he's blind", "lets to this test", lets try this, "he may be stressed".  They never once would tell me the side effects of the medicines they have administered.  I have always trusted the veteranians.  When our baby lost use of his legs and was at the emergency , I was the one who mentioned the metro drug he was on, and asked if that is what is causing this.  They said its so rare that probably not.  I looked it up on the internet and the side effects were exactly what my baby was going thru, and my vet shouldve known that and these emergency vets shouldve known too.  Why am I paying them for me to tell them what that drugs side effects are.  ERRRRRRRR.....  And i recently researched his blindness and also found out that steroids & antishistimines can cause that, and my dog has had tons of those...but did they ever tell me ....nope....and you know why....cuz they probably don't know!  Our baby was abandoned in the below 0 weather, and we found him 9 years ago....and he has had a great life since, and the memories of him are making me smile and also tear up. But I do feel better this morning.....

OMG, I am so sorry sweetie. But understand this, he is in no pain anymore and the sickness he felt is gone. Wow, This was not the out come i was hoping for.  We are always here if you need to talk. You did what was right and made a very hard decision that you felt comfortable with. Only you know how much pain and discomfort he was in and what was best for him over all. When your ready, you should try going to a shelter and maybe adopting a new dog or puppy. They all need a loving home and might help comfort you also. Good luck and let us know what happens.

Thank you so much to all for your concern and support and prayers.  It's been a very sad day.  But I am glad we went with our gut and didnt put him through another unnecessary test.  It was his time to go.....and he's in a better place right now.....but I miss him more than anything right now.

I too, am terribly sorry for your loss.....It sounds as though your a wonderful pet parent and I commend you on that.....You went above and beyond for this guy and I believe he knew it!  I'm also sorry that I couldn't help you!

I'm glad you had the  autopsy done.....At least you know what was going on with him....I wish I had been smart enough to do that a few years back....It still haunts me--the not knowing part......

One of the signs of Metronizole toxicity is "Vertigo". So, that fits some of his symptoms.....I believe it poisoned him, also......If you have another furkid that uses the same doctor, you might want to rethink that......Just my opinion....

Again, My heart goes out to you....Please take care and my prayers are with you.....Sincerely, Karla

I am so sorry for your loss.  I haven't been on today and just saw this.  Unfortunately, dogs are so stoic they often don't show any symptoms until they are so ill there is nothing that can be done.

Metronidazole can be very effective for short term digestive problems, but you are so right it is not usually used as a 'maintenance' drug.  At that point your vet should have suggested more tests to determine the root cause of the problem.

Please take care and know you did everything you knew to do.  You are in my thoughts.

I also wanted to let you know that he had every test possible.  Changed food. As for blindness, he went to an optomitrist and he said it was Sards.  I never believed it tho.  Hes been blind for almost 2 years, and his pupils never reacted to light.  All of a sudden a week ago at the vet, his pupils were reacting to light.

Another thing, is that he had allergies to grass, and was on predisnone and recieved allergy shots.  I think that contributed to his blindness too. After he became blind, he gained weight, and diaherra issues, never had allergy problems again, didnt feel much pain.  I think cuz his body was releasing tons of cortisol but the vet said no.  Just so confusing...i tell ya!

The drug he was given was called "metonidazole".  He was a mixed shephard.  The Metronidazole was for his diaherra.  He was on that for a year, and we believe it poisoned him.
We put him down today.  The vet truly didnt believe he had anything wrong with his esophagus/intestines etc, so we didnt put our dog thru the barium test. The vet said he was dying.  The vet did an autopsy....my baby boy had liver & gallbladder cancer.  Tons of spots in Liver. He also had nuerological issues. This vet we had today was standing in for the regular one we had.  He was right on and Im glad he knew what he was talking about.  Thank you for trying to help......btw....The drug Metronziadole has side effects for dogs being on it long term.  Our vet never had us come back in, he just kept refilling the prescription.  Because our dog lost weight, he was being poisoned by this drug.

Hello & welcome.....More information, please....

What is Metro Drug? A year on it? Did your Vet not continue to look for the cause of the Diarrhea?

I assume an extensive Parasite test has been performed?

Has your dog had any bloodwork tests?

Has he been tested for Tick Borne Diseases?

Have any food trials been done to rule out food intolerences? What food does he eat? How long has he eaten it?

Has he been fine until a year ago?

Was a cause to his blindness ever found? Has he been tested for Diabetes?

What breed of dog is he?

Anything else you can list here would be helpful..........Karla
