Dog tail not healing

Please help me. 1 week after having a tumor removed from underneath the base of his tail, my 9 year old golden retriever's taill is discolored, slightly weeping, and painful. This surgical incision was partially left opened because after the tumor was removed there wasn't enough skin to bring together. Does anyone have any experience with what me and my dogare going through? He is on 2 antibiotics/pain med/topical antibiotic.
Please anyone who can help.
Christine

My 9 year old schitzu had a tumor removed from base of.   his tail 15 days ago and he's had a terrible recovery so far.  They shaved his entire tail for surgery.  The first four nights neither of us slept because they gave him such a close shave his tail was weeping and blood red.  They did not bandage that part and he couldn't stand for it to touch anything.  I was furious at vet but couldn't do anything  but raise cane with them and offer to give them a shave.  They gave me tramadol for him.  He only weighs 6 lbs.  It didn't seem to help much for first 4 days.  After returning for bandage change in 4 days they decided to wrap entire tail.  He handled that a little better.  They told me skin was dead and not healing fast and to bring him back in 4 days for another bandage change.  I did.  They say still not regenerating skin - return in 4 days.  Got another new bandage and told that when I bring him back this Monday they will leave bandage off as it needs to breathe.  I'm sure it does but am worried about how he'll handle it as it still hasn't closed.  Anyone had a good outcome with this?

Corona amimal salve (yellow container with red lid) works wonders for infections and open wounds.  It will heal it with in 24 hours.
I had a cat lose her tail and the end of it was open for a few days, could see the bones, found her with maggots in it.  ICK.  But after I got it all cleaned out, I put a gob of this stuff on it and by the next morning it was all closed up.

it works wonders on humans too.  great for diaper rash and other open wounds.  ♥

Did the vet give you anything like nolvasan to put on it. He should have given you something to put on it every day, and it should have been wrapped!

I know what you are going through a little.  My 13 year old chocolate lab had a tumor and the tip of his tail removed about 2 weeks ago.  Three days after the surgery, he chewed his stitches off, and had to have it all re-done.  Now it's been 2 weeks and I took him in today to have the stitches taken out and the tissue is dying around the stitches.  The vet says it just may take a little longer, or he might have to have it done again with more tail removed.  Here's what I've learned about tails.  1) there is not a lot of flesh on the tail so it takes longer to heal and there is not a lot to pull back together after they take the tumor completely out. Leaving it open because there is not enough flesh sounds odd to me.  They took the tip of my dog's tail off for this very reason.   2) 1 week is not a long time for such a surgery.  Give it a little longer.  3) don't be afraid to ask all the questions you need and even call them after you get home if there are things you forgot.  If the vet isn't helpful, do consider getting another.  Poor little baby puppy.  I know how hard it is.  My pup has been so sweet about everything.  good luck.  If you find out any more, post so I will know too. I hope this helps a little.

Bring him to another vet - FAST.  The wound shouldn't have been left open - thats crazy !  Also, is your dog neutered?

Look at the Right side of this screen.  You should see something labeled Related Expert Forums.  Directly under that, there is a blue link that says Ask A Vet (Pet Health).

Click on it, and that's where you'll find Dr. Chengs forum.

You might try posting this on the Ask a Vet forum.  Dr. Cheng usually has very good advice for people.

Is he constantly licking the area?
