Found lost pitt bull ... what do I do?

So I was going to partial today and on the way, a pitt bull ran in front of me.  I stopped along side the road and picked him up.  He is very sweet.  He's full bred and has a beautiful brown, pewter, silver coat.  He obviously belongs to someone because he had a collar on, but no tags or chip (took him to the animal hospital).  He's very sweet but he's still a puppy.  I'm going to put ads up for him, but I know when people see "pitt bull" I am going to get a lot of phoney calls.  He's so cute.  He's rolling around the floor right now - very playful.  Echo is pretty angry at me but she'll just have to get used to it because I have to keep him for a while.  I'm upset with whoever owns him.  It was very irresponsible to have him running around rampantly, especially in the road.  I knocked on doors but no one answered.  Maybe he got loose - I'm not trying to blame the owner, but I'm in a college town.  There are TONS of abandoned animals in this area.  I'm not sure what to do with him.  He has so much energy.  I've never taken care of a pitt bull.  I only had Nico and she was more like a cat.  Any suggestions?

My boyfriend found the owners ... it snowed here over night and I was walking him (being dragged) and I fell on my face in the snow and he kept dragging me.  I'm glad he got home.

Pits are wonderful dogs!  They are very loving, playful and have a lot of energy.  If they can't direct their energy toward something good, however, they can do a lot of damage to your house and furniture with their strong jaws lol!
As far as trying to screen calls for the lost dog, it is a big concern.  The wrong people will easily try to get a free pit.  I would suggest either holding something back on the description (like a specific marking) and make the caller describe it, or, the flip side, ask the caller 'Hey, does your dog have a notch on the left ear?'  Someone trying to scam you will probably quickly say 'Oh, yes, that's my dog'.
Good luck and enjoy the puppy!

You might also call your local Animal Control Office.....Tell them that you have this dog, in case anyone calls looking for it....Have the callers give a detailed description of the dog they're looking for...

Usually, owners of lost pets will check with Animal Control first....This may be your way to find it's family....Let us know what happens.....Karla
