I've taken him to the vet for this, she was unsure of what was the cause but was thinking it may be fungal. Has given us an oral antibiotic and is doing further tests on skin scrape.
Background: Dog is a 6 year old chow/shepherd mix. No recent changes to diet or medications. Well tempered with a little bit of an anxiety issue but has never had any health problems. Adopted when he was 1 so unsure of his medical history as a puppy. He is bathed regularly, once every other week or so. He gets shaved early spring so that tick inspections are easier, but had regrown appx 1" of his coat at the time i noticed the issue.
Symptoms: 1 month ago it started with what i thought was a rash on his groin area with skin discoloration and white dry flaky patches that crusted and peeled up. He did a good job keeping it clean, and i applied some apple cider vinegar because i thought it was just a rash or allergic reaction to something he'd brushed against. Just recently I noticed a few sticky/***** spots on the top of his back. There was also noticeable long-hair loss on these spots and it was just his undercoat exposed. While inspecting his undercoat I was able to pull off a piece of his hair/skin! His skin had turned black in these spots during this process. I shaved him again to get a better look at the issue and noticed that there were several spots along his back.
Photo: I've attached a link to a photo of the issue. The dark spots are where the skin has discolored, the pink spots around it are where it has flaked off. The lesions in the center of a few spots are where the black skin peeled off before the underneath layer had time to heal.
