Itching

I  sent my dog for a wash and cut and they use an electric razor to cut the fur back.  This time my dog has come back in distress and is scratching badly. Some areas she looks quite red. We had a very bad night last night but it is better today. I have smeared some Curatex cream on the worst parts  which seems to help.  Is there anything else I can do to get her over this.  I am not going back to that salon again.

Thanks so much for the warning.
I shall be very careful with her now.  I am not in the States but in South Africa. Love this technology to say Hi! around the world..  I don't think we have the products you mentioned here in SA. But I do have some cream the Vet gave me called Curatex which I am putting on her stomach. Its a very small bottle and she is not a small dog though.
Thanks so much.

NO~NO~NO!!!!   Don't put Dettol on her skin! It's a cleaning product like Lysol (In the US).
This will inflame her skin to the point of no return!

You don't say what Flea products you've used, but it sounds as if you've already overdone it.....If they are topical products, skin reactions can occur from them alone.....These meds. are strong!!!

Don't make the mistake of adding a flea/tick shampoo to all of this, as a reaction to the combination could literally kill her!

Please, find an OATMEAL base shampoo & use it on her skin....Let it soak for about 7-10 minutes, then rinse, rinse, rinse.....This will help with the inflammation.....

You can even buy an Oatmeal base bath product for humans....It's called Aveeno Bath here in the states...Mix it up with some water and rinse her w/ it....It's made for skin problems & would ease her skin, alot.....

Do not use any kind of drying agent as it will increase the problem.....If you have access to any Organic Coconut Oil, it would do wonders for her skin....It's Anti-bacterial, Anti-Fungal & Moisturizing.....She will be alittle oily, but it sure would sooth her inflamed skin!
Take care, Karla

I did speak to her and she asked me to come in to look at the dog.  She said that it was fleas and although I had given the dog a flea medication one dropped off my dog right there.  But taking the dog to a salon where dogs are cut must be flea ridden and they must pick up fleas there.  I have now given her more flea meds (stronger) and she is still scratching. AaaH!  Thanks for all the info and support! What next ?  Someone said try getting a cloth and rubbing her gently down with diluted dettol?

Well I know what I would say, but of course they aren't going to like it. I would tell them they had done a bad job, and caused damage to your dog, and worry and stress for both of you. And possibly vets bills. And they had failed to provide the service they should have done. And I would flatly refuse to pay.
Of course this is not an easy way to go (well it might be....they might back off)
The other option is let it go, and never use that salon again. But of course that doesn't help others who might get the same experience there with their dogs.
It dos depend on what you feel like doing. Confrontations are always difficult. But it's my opinion this salon needs some feedback.

Thank you, that's exactly the problem.  I specifically asked that she should be cut for a winter coat and when I received her back she'd been cut right down to almost the skin.   Soo bad!  Now I have not paid yet and do not know what to say to the salon any ideas?

OK this sounds like razor burn.
It was irresponsible of that salon to cut your dog like this. I know razor burn is quite likely to happen if the dog doesn't stay still when being trimmed. But they should have either got a person to hold her still, or should have re-thought, and called you about the problem, and explained that to you.
....well, that's my idea about it anyway....

I think the best thing you can do is keep up the antiseptic cream. I have a feeling this will go down in a couple of days. But do watch out for any worsening of symptoms. If, in the next day it is no better, or if it's worse, take her to see the vet.

My dog got a touch of razor burn when I took her for her senior blood panel. The vet apologized but said she had struggled so hard, even three of them found it hard to hold her down. (I was actually so upset at that trauma for her, that I can hardly bring myself to take her for another blood panel!)
Anyway -that aside, the rash went down in a couple of days, with no problems. The vet did say that some antiseptic cream if necessary would do the trick, and it did.
