Have been trying to look up some of the info I  have from Dr. Dodds from when our Greyhound was ill. He had Lymphoma but also had kidney issues.  Now, remember that I was treating a Greyhound so any doses would have to be adjusted for your dogs.

This is part of what she sent to me
Prescription diets are not the way to treat them . We give a grain-free lower fat senior diet -- like Wellness Super5 Mix for seniors or Eagle Holistic Select for seniors, or Natural balance or Taste-of-the-Wild etc.   You can add the canned version of these food or just add the cooked chicken and  rice [be sure you steam brown rice twice as long as white rice so he can digest the hulls] like you’ve been doing.

To help with any low-grade GI tract irritation, you should continue Pepcid-AC twice daily at  20 mg each time , given about 30 minutes before her eats.

For the kidney issues, he’ll need sub-Q [or IV at the vet clinic] fluids twice weekly for several weeks – sub-Q fluids are easy to give, and they may even be able to teach you how to give them at home. This will no doubt perk him up and restore his appetite.

(He never got that bad that he needed the sub-Q fluids.)

She also wrote?
IF his BUN is very high, they could give him Azodyl supplement to help bring it down. If his blood pressure is high from the kidney disease, that can be easily treated too. Also, drugs to bind phosphorus may help, if his phosphorus is high.

I know I was feeding a food low in Phosphorus and I can't recall which one but was getting it from a local Pet Store and I believe I was feeding the duck and sweet potato one.
Hope this might help you some.

It might be wise for you to locate a veterinary Nutrtionist you can either go for a consultation with, or who is willing to speak to you over the phone.
I did that, and the lady I spoke to told me the particular diet I had been recommended by my vet to give to my dog, had all the balanced nutrition she would need, and also slowed down the effects of kidney failure.
Home cooked diets are a wonderful idea, and probably much better, but you will need some sound advice from a veterinary nutritionist first.
In my case I first tried researching on the internet and felt like I was sinking in quicksand, with all the conflicting advice, recipes, different ideas, forums, etc.
It was only when I spoke to that lady on the telephone, I felt clearer about what to do for the best.

Having had Shelties myself for years, have been checking this discussion.  I'm not real sure what you mean either.  A kidney duet, usually from the Vet or a recommended home cooked one should be sufficient.  I was dealing with this also when our Grey had Lymphoma and kidney failure.  Maybe I can still find some of thaw info Jean Dodds gave me.
Also, Yahoo has many groups and you might want to see if there is one addressing canine kidney issues.  I was on one of the canine Lymphoma forums and learned a lot, some info I used (diet and supplement issues) as I decided to do palliative care only.
Let us know if you can find a forum.  I just don't have the time now but will try to check on that other info.  If I remember correctly, it is not necessarily the amount of protein but the source and I believe you really need to watch the phosphorus .
Good luck

Hi Bella....
Thats the first I've heard of it, but that's not to say that there isn't something to it.  I guess you could ask your vet if he/she has any information on it.
Were the studies pertaining to dogs or humans....?
Are you thinking this may be the reason for your boys kidney disease...?
