Mange

How does a dog get mange?  I have posted here before about our shih tzu who chewed his back feet.  The vet said it was an allergy, gave him meds and he was fine.  Then he began chewing his front feet.  Again he had meds but this time we wrapped up his foot to keep him from chewing it during the healing process.  Although the vet has said allergies and/or boredom, I have never considered mange as a possibility.  How contagious is it?  I know it can effect the entire coat if not treated but does it sound like our shih tzu might have mange and give it to our other dogs (or cats)?

For anyone interested, we have a small tube of "YUK" - an anti lick gel.  It goes on the dog's tongue first (using a gloved finger) and then on the affected area.  Haven't tried it yet but if anyone is interested, will let you know how it goes.

My Husky/Shepherd recently started having red spots show up on his back feet and legs. They were red  and bare for about a week. We had been on Vacation and took him with us to see my inlaws so we assumed that had something to do with it. After about 5 days of the spots not changing just staying bare and red we began to worry and called the vet. They said I could bring him in for a skin scrape but to try Triple anitbiotic ointment and if it didn't get any better after three days to bring him in. So yesterday I put the ointment on his spots. The spots actually did look a little bit better today and it looked like they were starting to scab over! You might try a little Triple antibiotic ointment, it wouldn't hurt to give it a shot!!

No, I don't think it's mange.....Is there an odor?  I think it's probably yeast...Drives them nuts!!!!! See any yellowish color between toes or pads. I think yeast smells like "Fritos Corn Chips".  :)  There are lots of products for yeast...I do have my favorites, though. You really have to stay on top of it to get relief....Karla

Our dog chews on her paws causing sores.  The vet said it's allergies and we treat it with prednisone.  We also apply antibiotic cream to the sores.  If/when it gets really bad they put her on an antibiotic.

I think it's just allergies.

We once had a dog that had allergies, and it got so bad he chewed all his fur off, and rubbed it off his back. he was almost completly bald and looked like he had mange. But it was just allergies.

I think you will just need to keep your dog on the meds the vet is giving you.
