Mini Schnauzer Wound won't Heal

I found a wound on my mini-Schnauzer's groin. I do not know where it came from. My yard is clean of debris and fenced. I took him to the vet. He had surgery, a tube inserted, stitches & antibiotics. The vet said it was a bad infection. 2-weeks later, everything was removed and it looked healed. A week later, the wound appeared again filled with pus.
Again, he had surgery, a tube inserted, stitches and different antibiotics given. The tube was again removed and it looked all healed. Wrong! Over the weekend I noticed where the tube was inserted there was now an air bubble over it. The next morning the bubble was gone and the wound was open. There is no pus, just a clean, pink cut.
I am off to internal medicine in Tampa, FL. My normal vet has never seen this.
Something more happened earlier this year. He was acting drunk and fell over many times. I took him to the vet for this and the vet felt he had ate something bad. This drunkeness continued for about 3-months. Then it just stopped. I'm thinking it may be connected. My husband wants the dog put to sleep. This is not an option for me. We are financially OK right now but we have spent over $1,000 in 7 weeks. What the heck is causing this? I asked the vet if my dog was terminal, he said NO. I will post the outcome today, I just want to know if I'm looking at something terminal. I don't think I could handle that as I have lost 2-Shar Pei's. One to cancer and the other to bowel complications.

I am so sorry to hear this. I just had to put my dog to sleep on the 15th and I am lost without her.  Please know that he is in a better place and you made the right decision.  I pray for your peace at this difficult time.  Know that others are going through the same thing, too and our pups were very lucky to have such caring parents as us who always put their needs before our own.

My dog had an unknown infectious disease. They wanted to remove his leg. I had a very difficult time making a decision. It is not about money, it's about quality of life. He would never been able to accept that. Yes, they ran many tests on him. They do not know how or why he had this. I would have paid 10k to save his life. I love him that much. I had him cremated and my best friend in the entire world is gone now. I can't believe it.

Right now, I wouldn't label this case as terminal.  Even though this wound is taking an abnormally long time in healing, it does seem to be finally getting there.  The last time it opened you said the tissue looks nice and pink, so it finally seems to be going in the right direction.  Has the infected matter been tested so that you can figure out a specific antibiotic to use?  Has any kind of x-ray or CT scan (expensive, I know) been done to see exactly how deep the infection goes?

And $1,000 isn't all that bad for such a serious issue.  We spent $7,000 this year when our dog impaled herself on a plant stake.  Thank God she's 100% after such a trauma.  Now we have to deal with the credit card trauma!  :-O
