our French mastiff called zeus suddenly died in the early hours of sunday morning on the 1st February...he was totally fine when we came in at night he went about his business and then jumped in his bed and fell sleep...I said goodnyt to him and went to bed myself...at around 4am my daughter woke up shouting and my partner went downstairs to make her a bottle, she noticed two large piles of sick at either end of the doors which had his food in and zeus on the floor breathing heavy and would not move..I then came downstairs and laid him on his side and messaged his stomach as I believed it was a case of bloat..I quickly opened the car and scooped him up and took him to the vet for treatment..they told me he had suffered from a bloodclot in his lung and there was nothin they could do apart from euthanisation after he never responded to any treatment and they could not stabilise him....Zeus was a healthy dog and only 3 years old and it's such a shame that he's gone and we're all totally devastated and shocked as we never knew this was goin to happen

My most sincere condolences to you on your loss. It's never easy to accept the death of a beloved pet, and it's even more difficult when the pet was so young. Take comfort in the fact that, as you said, she died in her sleep and was not in any pain.
As Ginger has already said, the only way to find out the cause of death is to do a necropsy on the body. It would be completely up to you as to whether or not you have this done. If you feel it would bring you closure, then have it done. If you feel you can accept her death, for lack of a better way to put it, "as-is", then of course, don't. It's entirely up to you.
The fact that you said there was bleeding from her nose and mouth when she died makes me think that there was some sort of either a tumor involved that ruptured or an aneurism that burst. As Ginger said, rat poison could also have caused the bleeding that you saw. Those are the only things I can think of right offhand that would cause that type of bleeding. But again, in any case, the only way to tell would be via necropsy.
Again, my deepest sympathies to you on your loss.
Ghilly
I am terribly sorry and feel your pain. I cant tell you I know why she died. I don't. It's just so sad to hear of a young healthy dog dying suddenly like this.
The only way to find out of course, is to do a Necropsy (autopsy) on her. But if you are anything like me, I couldn't, and would prefer to let her rest in peace.
It is possible -as a guess- she could have ingested something toxic? It is also possible she caught a poisoned rat or mouse outside? Sometimes dogs will eat something like that in the blink of an eye while on a walk, and we may not even notice.
My condolences, and I am so sorry.
