My Dog Refuses to Eat

Okay so i have a 8 year old dalmation blue heeler mix, who just recently has become and extremely picky eater. he just recently started vomitting, he wont eat his dog food, we've even tried giving him scraps from our dinners to see if he'll eat, most of the time he will eat it, but others he wont. I dont know if this plays a factor but he didn't really start acting this way intill we got out new puppy who is 7 months, he's a mini pinscher.

Any help you can give me  would be appreciated. We would take him to the vet but we can't afford it, but we may have to, i dont want to loose my dog.

I'm sorry to say this but he needs to be seen by a vet. Most will work with you on a payment plan.
If this has been going on a week and his mood is like that, something is wrong. 8yrs is not all that old. It may be something very simple, or may be serious. A new puppy certainly can make another dog jealous, and put them in a depressed mood. But with those symptoms it could be so many things.
It sounds like you are saying he is drinking a lot more than normal. That could mean quite a bit.
Are his gums pink as they should be or are they pale and more white/pink? Also the mucous membrane lining inside his mouth? And belly area? Pink or Pale?
Are you able to catch some of his urine in a cup and see if it is darker yellow than normal? Or a brownish red? Can also look "thicker".
He's part Dalmation and they are prone to urine crystals/stones, which blocks up the bladder and their stomach gets bloated if the stones are big.  also he could just have a UTI (urinary infection) which needs antibiotics. And also requires that you withhold water for a period of time depending on the infection, drinking makes it worse at first until he gets the meds for a bit.. A UTI also may look like his back legs/hip areas are weak/ sore.
Drinking a lot and lethargic could also mean thyroid issues, auto immune issues.
Those symptoms cover a large range of things but he really needs a blood work up.
If the first vet you call won't work with you on a payment plan, call others. You can call your local animal control and ask them if they know of any vets who give discounts and will work with you on the money issue.
Please let us know how he's doing.
Wishing your baby well
Take care, Teresa ; )

Dog dehydrate very quick just like newborn babys...if you have to, syringe every 15-30 mins to hydrate, is his gums red??? Does he pant rapidly?
Boil rice, drain off the water, cool water, syringe rice water and alternate w/gatorade, you will even have to do this thru the night, depending on how long since dog has literally drank liquids...
If in real trouble, every 15-30 mins, or not so bad, every 2hrs...you've got to keep the dog fluids going in....has dog urinated, if so, how long ago, has there been a stool, how long ago...is the dog lying on side, where before he would curl up???
You might be right, he might be trying to go....dogs will hang on as long as they can for the pure innocent love they have for their owners, they will continue to doggie things for they are dogs...with their sweet little eyes trying to do the talking...you basically, have to run your own ICU unit if this little fella can pull through...
So you and yours are in this most difficult and challenging time...please keep posting...

he's not really his normal self at all, he use to be a very active dog, now all he does is lay around.. when anyone would come home from being gone a while he would wag his tail, bark and just all out talk to you, now he just kind of sits there an waits for you to come to him. He drinks a ton of water, and if the water in his water bowl isn't to his liking he'll go to the toilet and drink out of that, so we really have to watch the water bowl.

he's been vomitting for about a week. i'm afraid that maybe he's just getting ready to die on me, and i dont want that to happen. Oh at a last resort last night i made some chicken broth, and he refused to drink it.

If you have anymore advice i'd great appreciate it. I'm gonig to try an see if he'll eat the beer and rice.

What are you feeding your dog? My Dalmatian was the same way. We ended up going through diffrent brands of dog food until we foud out what one he liked. He is eating Iams large puppy breed food and loves it!! From the moment we put it in his dog dish. I would recommend fidning a diffrent brand of food. My Dalmatian would not eat cooked beef and rice as he was very pickey!

Well he can definitely be jealous with a new little one around and letting you know about it.

How is his mood? Is he his normal self otherwise? Playful or lethargic? Peeing/pooping OK? How long has he been vomiting? Is he drinking normal or too much? Is his tummy distended at all?
he may just have an upset tummy, maybe ate something in your yard? A toy? The puppy's food? The puppy? LOL...just joking......

Some ground beef cooked up and added with some rice is helpful with a tummy ache. Very plain foods. In small amounts.  anything spicey or acidic (like tomato sauce) is no good. If you have any pepto bismal type stuff you can try a little.
Plain chicken (no skin/bones) too.

This happening when the new pup arrived seems like it could be jealousy. With not eating. But it's the vomiting thats concerning. It really depends on how he is behaving otherwise.
