My beagle has more problems :(

I asked a question here earlier about my 9 year old beagle's chronic anal gland problems and I got some great advice.
The vet said they were infected and he's on a strong course of antibiotics, he's also taking his heart worm medication.

However, a few weeks ago, he developed a small bump an inch under his eye, sort of near his cheek. It wasn't that big and the vet never even bothered to test it. But today the bump is huge, I wish I could take a picture of it. It's looks like a marble under his skin, what could it be???

Also, 3 days ago, he started having trouble pooping. Like he keeps scooting down, but nothing comes out. It's like he's constipated but then the poop that does come out is watery like diahrea. My mom said it's a side effect of the anti biotics so she wont take him to the vet. But THEN, yesterday he leaked blood through his penis for almost an entire day. (It wasn't in his urine, just when he's sitting at home, also he's not nutured).

So what should I do?? When he was younger, he also had a couple of episodes of blood through his penis. The vet tested his urine and found that his PH was a little high, so she put him on a special bladder food. But I kept telling her it's not his urine where the blood is in. Then she told me, if it was cancer he would start to deteriorate rather quickly. But that was when he was 6, now he is 9 and still playful and happy.

Sorry this was so long, I love my dog very much and I'm willing to take out loans to help him.

Wow, thanks for your reply. You seem to be very knowledgeable on dogs, I'm very grateful for your advice as my dog is my family.

I've been soaking the wound with warm water mixed with epsom salt, but man, he tries to nip at me everytime I do it. It's really hard to keep him under control, but I might try it with treats tomorrow.

Thanks again!!!!!

OK it's an abscess, -sounds like it. I don't think you need to take him to the ER unless he shows other symptoms such as extreme lethargy, pale gums, or obvious pain.
But I would take him in to the vet when they open. Just to get it checked out, and it might need further draining and some antiseptic to wash it out.
In the meantime, do keep the abscess as drained as you can, and be sure to keep the wound open, don't let it start to heal. Use a cotton wool pad or warm cloth soaked in salt water. Gently squeeze out and wash the wound regularly. Get someone if you can, to hold him still while you do this, and be careful of his eye. He won't like it! It probably hurts.

I know, it sounds strange to develop an abscess while on antibiotic treatment. But not all antibiotics are broad-spectrum, he may be on an antibiotic which targets a certain problem, and not the skin.

The anal gland infection may clear better when his bowel movements get to be more normal. I know it's a bit of a catch-22 situation. I would definitely bring this up again when you take him to the vet. He may need some other treatment.

Thanks a lot Ginger! He's an awesome dog and still as energetic as the day we got him 9 years ago.

I wanted to tell you, I made an appt with the Vet for Monday. But tonight, the lump suddenly opened up a bit and blood and pus started coming out. I squeezed it a bit and more bloody pus came out, but he won't let me touch it anymore.

Should I take him to the 24 hour emerg?? He's sleeping right now, but I'm worried about the open infection. I'm also surprised that after such strong antibiotic treatment, his anal gland infection isn't clearing up.

I hope all works out well for him. He is a lovely looking dog! I like Beagles, they're so full of character!
I hope his tooth problem gets sorted  and his other issues too. His eyes look bright, so his basic condition doesn't seem too bad....

Hi Ginger,

Thank you so much for such an insightful response.

I think it is a tooth abcess. He never lets me brush his teeth, so the most we've done for his teeth is giving him denta bones.

He's not shaking his head and doesn't seem to be in any discomfort. I touched the bump and it's defintely not hard, it's movable from side to side but doesn;t lift up off the skin.

Anyway, off to the vet we go again.

Thanks again, you're awesome!

My first thought when looking at this was that it is perhaps a tooth abscess. Has he had his teeth checked recently?
On the other hand, it could also be a cyst. If, when you gently feel it, does it feel attached somehow, or does it lift up with the skin? If it lifts up it sounds very much like a cyst.
Does it appear to cause him any discomfort or do you see him shaking his head sometimes?
It has a very rounded appearance, and that is quite cyst-like. But of course the only way to tell for sure is to take him to get this checked out. If it's a tooth problem, believe me, he would be a lot better off without that tooth! If it's a cyst, you need to know for certain that it is benign. A much higher percentage of lumps in dogs are benign, rather than cancer. But you need to know.

As for his diarrhea.....that well could be as a result of strong antibiotic treatment. When his antibiotic course is finished, make sure he gets a pro-biotic supplement. Natural "live" yogurt will do the trick if that is the problem. (available from health food stores) Give that to him (about 2-3 dessertspoons) each day for about a week.
Alternatively, there is a preparation known as "Diarsanyl" which contains kaolin, plus a pro-biotic. It works very well, and is available on prescription from the vet.
You could also try fasting him for 24 hours completely, then start giving him ONLY plain boiled rice for the first meal, floowed by plain boiled chicken with the rice for his second meal. Or you can add plain boiled white fish (de-boned)
Give him that for a couple of days and see if that makes any difference.
It probably will help his gut. If not -he needs to see the vet for sure, as dehydration can be caused by constant diarrhea.
On that note -do make sure he is drinking plenty of water. If not, give him the water the fish or chicken has boiled in, and you can also give him pedialyte.

As for the blood from his penis.....that could be very important. It could denote a few different things....local trauma (he hurt himself somehow)...bladder crystals or stones....or a prostate problem.
Either way, blood coming from an orifice is pretty major and needs the vet to look at him
