My dog is obssessed with Scratching herself!

Hello Everyone,
I have a quick question to ask you guys. My dog has a habit of over scratching herself to the point of making her skin raw and bleed a bit. She isn't like this all the time, it happens at random times through out the year that she becomes obsessed with scratching herself. Well she had a surgery about 6 months ago and we received mupirocin ointment for it. I was curious to find out if the mupirocin ointment would have any affect on her sores? I know it's to fight infection and bacterial growth but I was hoping it would alleviate her pain and sooth her raw hot spot.

Thanks in advance!

What food are you feeding?
I am not sure about the ointment.  Have you had the Vet check her and do possible skin scrapings or allergy testing?
Try bathing in a mild oatmeal shampoo for dogs.
On localized hot spots, usually at the base of the tail, I use a diluted solution of Betadine and water.  I soak a couple of cotton balks in it, wring about half, part the hair and squeeze the liquid on the spot and dab it with the cotton ball.  Take your fingers and separate the hair.  Does that make sense?  I would do this twice a day.  Or, call your Vet and see what they recommend.
These things can be hard to figure out.  Could be some skin issue going on, food you are feeding, contact dermatitis, something outside or being inhaled.
