Pug problems?

I've noticed a couple times that my pug would suddenly begin grasping for air in the middle of his sleep.  The struggle for air wakes him up and he begins to make snorting sounds for about 10 seconds before he is able to breathe regularly again.  Is this a common problem with pugs or should I get him checked for respitory problems? Thanks.

Thanks for the help.  Both Pekingese and Pugs have short noses, but if your vet is correct about this "choking" being due to having a short nose, then these dogs should be "choking" constantly and not just once in a while.  I'll bring him to my vet and I'll post back with what she says.

Hi, I have a Pekingese dog,  He is 10 years old and does this once in awhile... it's like a choking thing...I usually rub his throat (softly) from the front to the back till he stops..not too long...a few rubs...it's like he looses breath and can't catch it...does this sound like what is happening to your pup?  The Vet told me because he doesn't have a longer nose, he breathes that way at times??  As long as it doesn't happen alot, he told me not to worry...thanks

Is it kind of like a reverse sneezing fit?  That can mean anything from an upper respiratory infection to allergies.  If he keeps it up, it does warrant having your vet check him out.
