Rash on my American Bulldog

I have a 2 year old American Bulldog, Bozo, that I recently rescued from my local animal shelter. When we got him he had a small ras we took him to the vet and had all of his shots and he was given a clean bill of health. Since then the rash has gotten worse. He scratches constantly. My vet says Benedryl 2x a day to see if it helps, but it maskes him so drowsy. I have tried bathing him, and also trued a hydrocortisone cream to no avail. Any suggestions?

My dog has just recently formed allergies to wheat and chicken.   He was breaking out with these red hot spots and under his arms get extremely itchy for him.  We changed his diet to a fish based formula food, no wheat or chicken what so ever and I have him on some fish oils too.  You want to put as much moisture in their skin so it's not a itchy, don't bathe them much either....My dog loved his bath's and I had to cut them down to 1 every 3 months.

Since the benadryl helps, it sounds like an allergic reaction.  You may need to see a dermatology and allergy specialist to get to the bottom of it.  Another possibility is a fungal infection.  Don't give up yet.  There are plenty of as yet unexplored avenues to go down.
