Seizures Lead to Death

Maltese died March 31st of seizures lasting over four hours. Valium was administered with injection, intervenous and rectally to no avail.
Dog was to be 2 years old April 2, 2008 today.
Dog started with a slight tremor in sleep last August. By November - Thanksgiving seizures were lasted for 1/2 hour coming in clusters. Phenobarbital was perscribed and slowly increased. Testing in hospital did not reveal anything. Three doctors including neurologist examined him and oversaw medication. By December seizures were happening every month lasting 1 hour. Further blood work, MRI and Cat scan did not reveal any abnormalities. Next few months seizures were happening every three weeks until death.

We are devasted ....seeking information or answers

I am so sorry for your loss.  I have a french bulldog that suffers from seizures - and as you know ... its horrible.  Calvins seizures were uncontrolable, until the doctor added pottasium bromide to his pheno.

I am so sorry for you and your pup, and you certainly have my sympathy for your loss.  Any kind of neurological disorder is difficult (and expensive) to diagnose and treat.  It's the same story with people as well as animals.  Although MRI and CT scans can help pinpoint some problems, they can't diagnose them all.  Sometimes medical science can't help us.  It sounds like you went over and above the actions of most pet owners in finding answers and treatment for your dog.  Please have no regrets or guilt for his death.  A post-mortem (autopsy) examination may have pinpointed the cause of the seizures, but maybe not.  It appears your dog is just one of those cases in which you'll never really know exactly what happened.
