Sudden Death of Dog

Hi! My fiance and I lost our long haired dachshund yesterday and can;t believe it happened. We took him in the day before to have him fixed. He did have blood work done to three weeks before to have his heart worms taken care of. We woke up the next morning and he was stiff. The day of the surgery when we picked him up  he kept whimpering and making small barks, We thought it was just due to pain and that he was uncomfortable. The rest of the evening he was doing this and so we gave him half a tablet of pain medication. The vet had to put a funnel on his head to keep him from biting at his incision. He was in a "drunk" manner that evening and we figured  it was because he was trying to get use to the funnel. We also gave him some ice cubes because he seemed very weak. We really can not believe this happened he was only 4 years old.

Hi
So sorry for you. I lost my best friend almost 1 month ago, she went everywhere with me, always protected me, Now she is gone. Still having a hard time dealing with this. The only thing I could suggest is get another dog, But don't forget your old buddy. To me this helped relieve some of the pain. But not a day goes by that I don't think of my old buddy. My old friend is buried in my yard, I put flowers on her grave everyday, and say good morning and Good night to her. I really do understand what you  and others go threw. But life goes on, so try getting a puppy, that might help you some.

Sorry: Joe S

What an awful shock for you.  I can't imagine what might have happened.  Did the vet even have an educated guess?  I'm so sorry and hope you find peace soon.  :-(

Welcome to the dog forum, very sorry for your grieving and the loss of your pet!
I read your situation, that is odd, did your vet have any explanation? Over to right of this thread and scroll down, you will see small box "ask a vet" Dr. Cheng, I have seen others post the same concern regarding the death of their pet, and the vet here has some very informative info that may help, so repost your question there too....
My belief regarding our loved companions we they go to their next destiny is:
You have a bright and shining star in the heavens, another star shines ever so bright in the name of your loved pet, who guards the gates of heaven (Rainbow Bridge).
I know this is a painful and most difficult grieving time, especially with questions of why?
Hopefully you will find peace and get the "Whys" answered, and you definetely sound like a wonderful, caring, loving pet owner, maybe one day another pet will get to share the love you have for animals...

I am so sorry. I know how hard it is to lose a dog and not know why...I think that's one of the hardest things to go through. Ten years ago, I came home to two of my dogs lying dead in the yard due to a very tragic, freak accident. I had only been playing with them hours before, throwing the frisbee and getting sloppy wet kisses.
Then only last week, I had to put my 2 year old border collie down because he had degenerative brain damage. I'm still recovering from that loss.
It's so hard to lose a beloved pet at such a young age, so unexpectedly, whether you know they're going to die before living a full life or just having to deal with the loss after they were literally there a few hours ago and then gone the next. I honestly understand the sense of anguish you must be feeling.
Please take comfort in knowing that you gave him a wonderful, loving home and life while he was here. I'm sure he loved you and your family so much, and know that you did everything you could to keep him healthy and happy. We can never see what's coming just around the corner, although sometimes we can sense it and other times we can't. One way or the other, don't feel guilty for this. There was no way of knowing that this was just his time.  I'm so very sorry for your loss.
