Taking a 6 hour drive with a little guy that gets very ill with motion sickness

Labor day weekend is coming up and we are planning a trip to Newport New Virginia, we are taking our babies with us.  Abbey is a very good traveler ... however buddy is not.  I did get pills from the vet that will calm buddy for trips however they seem to leave him quite groggy and it takes him two days to shake off the effects of these pills.  Is there anything that anybody knows of that will help settle my poor boys stomache for a long drive?  I took this up with the Vet and his only solution is this particular medication.  I am trying to figure out something that will help buddy to enjoy the trip, and enjoy his stay in Newport News ... I would like it if he were able to enjoy the beach while we are there but if he is on this pill he will not be having any fun at all ... just wondering if there is anything anyone has tried that worked?

As always your advice is so helpful here and I appreciate any help you give.

Hi LuAnn...This medication must be very new.....And yes, it's written for motion sickness in the oral form.....The injectable form is for chronic vomiting for other reasons.

However, I read that it has NO effect on the stomach itself!  It effects the brain to tell the stomach not to get sick!  That kinda scares me!!!!

The info. sheet says that it is NOT sedating, but then turns around and states that possible side effects can be lethargy & vomiting!  WHAT?

It can only be given 2 days back to back, no more.....That leads me to believe that it's toxic!  I'm sorry, but be careful with this one.....

I'd try human Dramamine (OTC)......The dose is 2-4 mg. per lb. every 8 hrs.

Good luck & have a great trip....Karla

I only gave it to Buddy one time.  I didn't like what it did to him.  People I know think that I a am a bit crazy when it comes to my little fur kids.  They think that because the Vet tells you to use it that it is the best thing to use.  I just don't like what it did to him so that's why I was looking for an alternative for him as I don't really feel safe using this med.

Human Dramamine (OTC) is safe to give to you dog?  I never knew that.

The medication is Cerenia 160 mg.  I only give him 1/2 a tablet because 160 mg is more than he needs for his size he weighs 18 lbs.
