My 3 yr old lab/chow dog ear is RED

My dog's ear is bright RED, there are no black/brown stuff in it.  He shakes his head when I try to touch it.  Is there anything I can sure over the counter to help him?  Can I give him anything for the discomfort? I clean his ears once a week or as needed.  He started this about 2 days ago when he got into a river after it rained.  I never let him swim in the river.  So II need help on what to do.  Thanks

After a year of ear problems off an on, using drops, antibiotic, anti fungal, earwash, etc. we started putting a dollup of yogurt in our Lab's food each day.  Cleared his ears up within a week and no problems since.!

Time to see a vet.  It could be a bacterial or fungal infection, and you need to be sure exactly what it is in order to treat it correctly.  Poor guy - he's got to be just miserable.
