Trouble going to the Groomers

My dog has for the past few years become very aggressive at the groomers.   He doesn't want to go in and when I leave him there he tries to bite the groomer and gets very vicious.    He's usually very kind and well behaved but the VPI Pet Insurance company made a comment that after several of his visits when he was younger , he''s now six years old...he came home and had trouble walking because of too close a shave in the private area and we had to go to the vet for a cortisone cream to help him heal.   Punky really needs grooming every six weeks because he is a Cockapoo so now I have a dilemma.   Do I buy shears and try to groom him myself.?   I've run out of groomers.  He's on the don't accept list at several groomers.  I really don't know how to do him properly.

Thanks for the suggestion.  I've been thinking of doing this and now will do it.   I don't know anything about grooming him, but will have to learn.  I really love him and want to do what's best for him.  I hate to think that Punky is scared.
Thanks for the stories and good wishes!

After bringing my dog to the same groomers a few times I really noticed how badly they had to urinate when we would walk outside. The groomer would say "bring them at 830 and pick them up at 3"...she wasn't taking them out the back to urinate/deficate like she said she did. Point being, my dogs would literally put their "brakes" on, when I would take them in. I read into and sure enough I looked her up on YELP and she has many strikes against her! Never again, my poor babies. Ted tried to bite her- and I'm sure he had a fair reason. I learned how to do it myself, they still don't love it - but they know I would never intentionally hurt them.
Good Luck.

something happened at the Groomers and he is telling you that - my groomer did not tell me that my dog fell off the table but she limped when she got home after all the excitement of me picking her up wore down - we went there again after 4 years - she would NOT go in - that is the dog telling you NO MORE - they speak to us - listen!
get a new groomer and let them know he was hurt - it could have been their fault or an accident - does not matter - the next groomer needs to know that and be ultra careful and the groomer that accidentally burned him while shaving him  needed to pay that vet bill !!! good Luck!

Will he let you groom him without any problem?  If so, I would Google or get a book on how to groom a dog, and do the best you can.  He might not look as good, but it will be a lot easier.  If he won't let you do it, have the groomers tried a muzzle when they work on him?
