What is a good small breed of dog for my 3 year old daughter??

My daughter is 3 years old and likes to have our cat sleep with her but the cat causes her asthma to flare up. I am looking to get a small to medium size dog that can sleep with her at night and become her companion. I also have 2 large dogs that have been with our family for a long time but they like to be outside more than inside.

What small breed would be good for her?? What breed would be able to handle a 3 year old holding them, playing with them, and not get aggressive or break easily??

She loves my mom's pug but I am not that found of pugs. The way they breath drives me crazy.

I do support the above posts, besides the ideal reason to bring a pet into our household would be to provide the pet a loving forever home rather than a pet pleasing our wishes.  It is not a good idea to get a dog or other pet to entertain a child.

Thanks for the advice. I will not be getting her a small dog right now. I will take your advice and wait.

I agree with the above poster. You should never leave a small child alone with a dog, ever. Even the most gentle of dogs can bite on occasion.

If you're looking for a non-allergenic type small dog I'd recommend a toy poodle, Bichon or Maltese. They usually have pretty good temperaments.

It is not recommended to leave young children alone with dogs.   I would be really worried about allowing them to sleep with her.  Children are restless sleepers and if she kicked the dog, etc and could easier bite her.
