How clever is your pooch

Ok I would like to know if your dog is intelligent. My beloved Mastiff Butch RIP........would have been the drollest dog I have ever known with a with a wicked sense of humour. For instance my Ex used to get up early to go to work and Butch used to jump in his place and go to sleep happy. One day when he did not have to get up so early we were awakened by Butch scratching  and howling frantically at the back door with  his foghorn voice  because he wanted to go outside! so my ex got up and  went to open the door .Well guess what happened .....as soon as my ex opened the back door Butch walked briskly back past him into the bedroom and got on the bed and flopped down with a cheeky look on his face. When we stopped laughing my ex ordered him off the bed.
Butch only half lifted his head and  with  haughty  cool    look that said   make me hah ....well you try and move a 105 kilo's of dead weight! we did not bother ....we figured out he could stay this one time.He never tried it again I think guilt stepped in.
And the experts say Dogs cant reason.

So have any of you had an experience that proved how clever your dog was or is.I would love to hear it.

Hi  it is very common for a dog to try and get in between both of you.I hope he is a little tacker as if he is a fair sized dog you could have big probs.
When he gets more confident he could start growling and if not relegated to his proper  place in the pack.

At the moment it is a game but because he thinks! you have put him above your husband in the pack.Just make sure it does not go too far, one tiny growl take him off the bed at once and say firmly NO.

One thing about dogs is give em an inch they  will take a mile lol.

Me and hubby can be embraced on the bed just affectionately (nothing dirty) and maybe give each a kiss and Lucky goes CRAZY looking for a spot to jump in between us where he can fit where does go above our heads inbetween us he pushes through covers whatever he can think of to fit in between us LOL! Hes quite funny but he is one lovable dog i wake up in the morning and the lil guy is sharing my pillow or hes between mine and DH;s pillows! he loves the bed! I have just looked at your photo of Copper and yourself. He was very beautiful.and very much in the American  Standard .Shane  (see   my pics)  is by an imported English Sire ! here in Australia most of our Retrievers are based on the UK Standard. But one thing that cannot change is they have that certain .look...Shane is too damn smart just taught him how to talk so having to put up with all these squeaks, howls and long drawn out growls, trouble is I understand most what he is saying and he is turning into a bossy boots latest order was..... let the cat in.(true)

Love  all the posts.  Want to know what true unselfish love is  GET A DOG.

I posted a string on the death of our dog, and the discussions and members of this forum have been SO helpful to us in working through it.  But I thought I should t post on a more positive topic too.
Our Copper who passed away this week was a big, dumb, 95 lb. retriever with a heart of gold, probably not all that smart in general intelligence.  But in his professional field, I was often really taken aback.  In particular, I was amazed at his ability to produce a mental map of the area around our house.  We live in a neighborhood with big yards, huge trees, tracts of open forest, lots of lakes and intersecting fences.  But we could throw a stick in any direction (and my boys can throw).  He would watch the stick, listen to where it fell, then for a minute you could see the mental gears turning.  The map in his brain would snap into place, he would head off (often in a direction very different from where the stick was), and unerringly thread the fences and forests to locate the stick.
I was just amazed at a- his sense of object permanence, and b- the unerring cognitive map he had in his mind.
Loved that dog.

How do I manage her 'periods'?
Well, she isn't spayed, so she does come into 'heat' twice a year. It's not a big problem for me. I run a pretty clean house, but forgive the tiny red drops I find here and there! They don't bother me! Fortunately I have rugs with strong patterns, and many of them have red/brown weave.....so the drips don't show up!! ha ha!

Otherwise, as we live in the middle of nowhere, there isn't too much bother with male dogs who might come calling. Most dogs here have been neutered anyway.

Of course, I have the smartest dogs in the world, right?!  ;-)

I have to say Chica was the funniest dog we've had yet.  She was a very smart, agile and energetic shepherd mix we rescued off the road at about 6 months of age.  She gave us a terrible time with housebreaking until she figured out how to ask us to open the door.  DH always kept a string of bells on the back door as a "burglar alarm" and Chica finally associated that sound with the door opening.  She'd bump the bells with her nose and stare at us until we opened up.  On the rare occasion she needed to go out after bedtime, the bells started up softly and got louder and more urgent the longer we put off getting out of bed.  LOL!

Chica understood how the doorknob worked but only managed to actually open it a couple times.  Those round doorknobs are a bear without opposable thumbs!  She was also the counter-surfing champeen of the world.  I always wished we'd been able to set up a doggie cam to see how she accomplished some of her best feats.  Loaves of fresh French bread were her favorite targets no matter how far back they were on the counter - or even on top of the bread box.  No dummy, she always hid the evidence by consuming the paper bag along with the bread.  I so miss that crazy dog!

When we rescued Maggie (my profile pic) from the SPCA, she was 3 months old.  Maggie loved to torture Chica by jumping on her first thing in the morning.  Chica would chase her around the living room for a few minutes and then stand and watch Maggie careen around the furniture.  The second Chica looked away, Maggie would dive under Chica's belly and "hide."  No matter how Chica contorted trying to get to Maggie, Mags kept right up with her movements.  It was truly a hilarious show but didn't last very long.  Two or three weeks and Maggie was too big for that particular game.  LOL!

Then there was the "hide in the bed" game that Chica loved.  She knew she wasn't allowed on the bed but tried it on every night in creation.  Our bed has high head and foot boards.  The minute I started off in the direction of the bedroom, Chica would tear off down the hall and sail effortlessly over the foot board with a half twist in midair.  That put her flat on her belly facing the doorway.  She'd fold her ears completely down to the sides of her face (hilarious in and of itself!) and barely peek her eyeballs over the footboard.  The second she saw me standing there, she'd duck back down again which began the "hide-and-seek" game.  Old Chica kept us laughing for 13-1/2 years.  :-)

Dear Ginger,
I would say she is "very" clever :) Our babies know who to come to for help, don't they? I have to braid my hair too, but I'm afraid my lil girl sees my pony as a play toy! And Yeah, it does hurt, esp when Magnolia tries to use my pony braid as a tug rope! :O) LOL
Not really funny when it's happening, but it IS a funny after thought ;-)

My dog always keeps pretty quiet in bed, if she wants to catch my attention (like the covers have come off her or suchlike, she gently paws me, and half asleep I move the cover, and we sleep on peacefully) I sleep very deeply and soundly once asleep. But one morning at 5 in the morning she sat on my head!! I have long hair which I plait up at night to keep it out of the way, and then she sat on that, and I couldn't move, and it hurt! I told her to move! She wouldn't. I tried to push here off, and she came right back again, till I was well and truly woken up. Then I caught sight of her face, and she looked.....concerned...? she ran to the door, and just about got outside when she had bad diarrhea. (this happened in June. She's fine now....she just drank river water, that's what made her sick)
The thing that impressed me was she knew exactly what to do to make sure I would wake up good-and-proper!
Normally I would have just turned over and gone back to sleep.
Clever girl!

We took our dogs for a walk up in the hills and dropped the leashes.  My pit mix took off like a bullet and I called him back.  Around a bush he went and was pulled up short.  I called again and he gave a half hearted pull and sat down.  I called again, he stood up, thought about it, walked back around the bush to freedom and ran back to me very proud of himself.

My little Shih Tzu has 17 toys and  gets them each by name! She even has a stuffed football (nearly as big as she is..... lol) and she plays "Are you ready for some football" :O)
Petsmart LOVES to see me coming thru their doors!!! LOL
We've tried to film her, but she HATES the camera! grrrrrrr I guess I'll have to let my son hide one day w/ the video camera, because it's really cute.
I can buy her a new toy, tell her the name of it (froggy, ducky, hamburger etc) and she remembers it "forever".....
I think she's pretty clever, but I'm a bit partial ;-)

The beagle has always started her "hunger march" about 15 minutes before her feedings.  She can be sound asleep but will wake everytime.  She has passed on this trait to the pup so now we have 2 of them that know how to tell time!!!           sara

We had a Sheltie that I swear would listen to out conversations.  Whenever there was a word or two she would recognize, her head would perk up to listen.  She had a boyfriend  visit her one day when she was in heat, twelve years later if you just casually said his name she would run to the door to see if he was outside.  We have a border collie mix now, and I think shes lacking a few brain cells.  She chases birds in the sky, but forgets to look where shes going, and smashes into trees.  We've had to take her to the vets more than once for concussions.
