As I posted our Westie has dry eye (and everything else) and we use an effective but expensive ointment in the eyes: Optimmune.
I'd like to cut cost as this Optimmune is symptom treatment, not a cure. It sounds like flax seed (I figured an ointment/liquid form for the eyes, one must read carefully) may be a good ongoing treatment as a simple food additive, if the dog will eat it. Is flax seed a seed? Where does one purchase it - I can check Amazon to see what they offer, but it may be a grocery store item for human consumption.
I try to ruse Opt morning and night, and wonder if using it once a day and say "artivicial tears" (for humans) once a day. If I try I'd think the prescription should be used in the morning as the following 12 hours will see at least 4 or 5 hours awake. The night would simply be for comfort when sleeping - ? Maybe the other way around if the eyes being closed makes the need for dry eye relief the greatest.
I found the following info on the web. I hope it helps. Blessings - Blu
Although taking Flax seed oil by mouth can improve symptoms of dry eye, it will not have an immediate effect (and can take up to two months to be noted). In the meantime I agree that it is prudent to avoid medicated eye drops. Instead, use of a "preservative-free" artificial tear is both safe and provides immediate relief. These generally are sold over the counter and come in small plastic vials for single use.
I use a prescription eye treatment: Optimmune. It is expensive, but it works. My Westie has chronic dry eye and the vet says we need to use the prescription twice a day for the rest of his life.
Dry eye can lead to blindness, and that must be avoided if possible.
Welcome....I don't know about Flax Oil, but I have read that Cod Liver Oil can be used....Let me think where I read it-----Oh Yes: Dr. Carol Osborne's webpage at: http://www.carolonpets.com/
She also sells a EYE supplement for dry eyes.....She use to be one of the Volunteer Vets in our "Ask A Vet" forum....Sadly, she no longer does that, but you can contact her at her websight & she will answer your questions.....
I believe there is a fee for a consultation, but I personally know of many people & pets she has helped....You will love her.....
There is an abundance of information on her page......Good luck, Karla
