flea medication allergy??

I think my Chi may be allergic to his Advantage flea and tick medicine. Just after we treated him 2 months ago his skin turned bright pink and he was itching like crazy! We took him to the vet and they said we werent bathing him frequently enough (every 2 weeks.) Gave him a Rx and sent us home... he got better throughout the month until we treated him with the Advantage again- bright pink and scratching like crazy again!! Any suggestions? We are taking him to the vet first think tomorrow but don't want to end up paying another $100 for anti itch meds and a brand new flea and tick Rx!!

Oh how terrible - give your dog a bath, maybe even an antihistamine pill - 1 mg per pound of weight - and give your dog's system a rest for awhile before trying anything else. The poor little soul.

Take him off Advantage (and similar products) and try changing to Sentinel.  It's a pill that takes care of heartworms, intestinal parasites and sterilizes any fleas that bite.  In all the years we've used it in our 2 dogs, we've only had a flea problem once.  That was last summer when the woman across the street refused to treat her 3 dogs and let them roam the neighborhood.  Every last dog they came in contact with was infested in about 5 minutes.  When she moved out, the new owners were nearly eaten alive, and once they got everything treated there were no more flea problems.   An occasional bath with flea soap along with Sentinel, and no problem.

Yes your dog is having a reaction to it. There should be a number to call on the box for Bayer so I encourage you to call and report it to them. I spoke with the company myself because we had several patient have a similar reaction to it. My own dog went crazy when I tried it on him (itchy, rubbing against everything and anything, etc) They admitted that they have had people calling them with similar reactions and that they were "looking" into it. I never use anything but Frontline Plus for my own pets and we now ONLY carry Frontline Plus in our clinic. Ask you vet for Frontline Plus or try deadfleaz ******* (spelled out website so it comes through) They are based out of Australia but they are cheaper then any other site I've found even with shipping and no Rx is required. Good Luck!
