intestinal blockage/dog

My  13 month, 8 1/2 lb min pin became sick on Monday a.m. Call it instinct but I just knew something was seriously wrong by her demeaner. After several episodes of diahrea and vomiting ( I tried to keep he hydrated with water in a syringe) i became extremely concerned at the bloody diahrea. I took her to the vet without an appoinment and told her I thought she had a blockage. I told her there was a portion of a doggie toy unaccounted for she had chewed the day before. I aasked for an x-ray before anything else. Sure enough..anyways, after several x-rays I asked the vet about doing surgery the next day since she was not better and things were not moving. I explained my concern for possible necrosis. SHe assured me to just wait another day. Well, she went in Monday and today is Wed. The vet finally just took her into surgery. What kind of recovery can I expect and is it normal to wait this long when there is blood being exspellled. I am concerned the delay did more harm than good. Is that possible.

Hello, i hope that when you took the dog in to see a vet they checked his temp. first. Bloody diarrhea can be caused by other things. First it could be worms, or he ate something that is poisoning. I f a doc did the x rays he should have done barium series it will tell were and if the dog ate something bc it will show in the insistent. Other thing is "PARVO"  if your dog dint get a booster this year i would be concern and ask your doctor. If you feel that your pup is dehydrated   give him some pedialyte  instead of water.

I hope this helps also... i work with a vet

Well I can understand the vet wants to be prepared before opening her up, as that is a major procedure, and they wouldn't do it without a decent reason.
However I do feel that it might have been better if they had hydrated her and stabilized her with IV for -say- a night? And done an "exploratory" the next morning a.s.a.p.
Especially under the circumstances, as you'd mentioned there was some of the dog toy definitely missing.
Is she in surgery right now? If she's a healthy fit dog, she will have a better chance, and a better recovery chance too. So I am hoping all will go well for her.

Bloody diarrhea is never a good thing to have. But it is more common with GI upsets of all kinds than you might believe. I spoke to my vet about this, the last time my dog had a bout of diarrhea back in the summer. It always scares me, but he said it can often occur with diarrhea, for the simple reason that the dog will strain with little feces to expel, and it can rupture small blood vessels easily.
