itchy and losing skin

I have 3 year old black lab/chow mix.  He has always shead a good bit but recently has become VERY itchy.  We have had to give him benadryl twice now due to the misery he is in.  I am waiting for the vet to call me so i can make an appointment but meanwhie I was hoping to get some advice from yall.  He is itching all over but the past day now we have discovered patches of thin white or clear and  bown sheets of what I am guessing is skin coming off.  I am going to add a photo in my pictures of the skin flakes I combed off for yall to look at.  He does not have any fleas so I know that isn't the issue.  He has made himself bleed in some spots from all the scratching.

hairless tails can be thyroid too. Get blood work and check thyroid levels. Thyroid is an easy fix and meds are cheap to keep levels where they should be. Good luck!

Chows are known in the derm world for getting thyroid issues and adrenal issues which can cause this and can be treated with meds. Have your vet run some blood work and possibly an acth stim test and/or sex steroid test.

I have the same problem with my dog. My vet has said that it might be dermatitis and so far I have found nothing to be of any help, including the ointments prescribed by the vet. My dog will itch the same place for weeks and then it will gradually go away. But, then he gets itchy in another spot - of current focus is his tail (now hairless) and his poor ears. No fleas here either.

Oatmeal baths were recommended for my dog but they don't seem to help much.

My vet did give me an ointment called Dermalone (i think) but it didn't help. I'm in the same boat as you. If you find anything that works, please share. Good luck.
