itchy ears

I have a 4 month old cockapoo who has chronic itchy ears. We've been to the vet twice who says there is no infection or mites. I have been using witch hazel ear wipes that don't seem to help. I'm thinking it is allergy related. What are the ingredients I should be looking at eliminating? She is very finicky. I've yet to find a food she likes. She doesn't like any treats, other than cheese. Could the cheese be an allergen? Any help would be appreciated.

Hi Carrie..My sister's dog eats like yours and always has. (12 yrs.) One bite at a time, into another room, on the carpet. Then comes back for more. :)  I'm glad yours is feeling better. My last suggestion was going to be to check the TIPS of his ears. Look through the hair. If they are dry and crusty, it could be mange and it's just showing up. It is extremely itchy! When this happened to me, I only had the ears treated with the dip and not his whole body. Had to do it about 4 times, I believe. It's been a long, long, time ago, but it never came back. That would be something else to look for if he continues to dig at his ears. My dog was only a few months old at the time, too. Anyway, stick with the grainfree food and good luck to you both....Karla

The vet said there was a little redness, but didn't think there was an infection.  I think the itching is actually subsiding. I have been using the ear wipes and ear wash along with a shampoo for dry skin. Also trying to feed her grain free. I really think she has some sort of eating disorder. No matter what the food, wet or dry or even peices of chicken or beef, she just nibbles at it. She doesn't appear to be feeling ill. Her bowel movements are normal.  When she eats, she picks up small bits of the food and takes it to another room. She will do that a few times and that will be it for her meal.

Yes, that could be yeast and it's very itchy...However, yeast usually causes the ears to look very inflamed, red, & swollen. Sometimes you can see the deposits of yeast. Goldish, brownish gunk that can be wiped out with a tissue. And it smells!  Do you see any of this? Let me know......Karla

Thank you I will do that.  Her ears actually do have an odor now. Kind of like smelly feet. Is that yeast?

Her ears don't really have an odor. Not yeasty anyway. I will try eliminating Corn and Wheat/. Thank you. She is just so finicky, it's hard to get her to eat anything. The vet had me buy Prescriptives food to put weight on her, Guaranteed she would love it at $40,00 for a two week supply. She didn't like it. She would only eat a couple of bites a feeding, just enough to stop her hunger, I guess. I might try another vet for a second opinion as well.

Thanks for your help.

Do they have an odor? Could be Yeast? Things to eliminate that can cause ear allergies are Corn and Wheat. Check the ingredients on the things you give her to eat.... I'm not sure about cheese....I would think an allergy to milk products would surface as loose stools or indigestion problems....Hope this helps....Karla
