ivermectin

our four year old husky/shepard mix is reacting to an overdose of ivermectin.  we are living in the dominican republic and are losing faith in our veterinarians.  he has been there for over a week.  we were seeing small signs of improvement (an effort to get up, recognition) but he seems to have slipped back into a comatose state.  he makes no attempts at getting up.  his symptoms started on a monday--we are now on friday of the next week.  the vets have him on IV and he was, just yesterday, well enough to eat yogurt.  why has he slipped back into a coma?  can we expect a recovery?

i did post this to ask a vet...i thought.
we live in the dominican republic--apparently they still use this ivermectin in strong doses in vaccinations as many dogs here suffer from heart worm and mange.  i guess that is how it happened.  do you know anything else??

I think your question would be better answered by the Vet here at Med Help.  You can post your question to Dr. Cheng by clicking the "Pet Health (Ask a Vet)" link on the right side of this screen.

All I can tell you is that, depending on the amount absorbed, the prognosis for a dog with ivermectin overdose is not good at all.  :-(  If you don't mind, can you tell us how it happened?  I hope and pray your dog will pull through, but it will probably be quite some time.
