low platelet now low red blood cell

hi! hoping for any info/suggestions.  Yellow lab mix adopted from a shelter 6 years ago she is now 7.  Out of no where noticed red wierd bruise looking marks on her belly.  Vet found a very low platelet count but other levels were fine.  Says other than rat poison or ticks not normal for our area there aer many possible causes?  From what I have researched looks like what she put her on - high dose pred /antibiotics/GI protectant is pretty much the norm ? 3 days later retest showed very low red blood cells. Vet is very surprised that she seems so normal given her labs. Gave me an oral iron liquid suppl. and since it is holiday the # for emergency clinic and it is pretty far away.  She is wanting to drink water constantly and yesterday she started not to be able to hold her urine but otherwise still seems pretty normal. It seems from what I have seen that some dogs respond quickly others take much longer and overall most of the posts seem pretty grim.  this is my first dog - and I don't even want to think I may lose my sweet baby. any hope/suggestions/reality ?  I did not even think to ask if the worse happens what really does happen like if I lose her - what happens?  who takes her ?what do they do with her etc ?

Could she have Cushings, look up symptoms on computer, or be diabetic??? Does her belly look like a pot belly, and her back legs weak??? Not sure for you....I know when I am in a crisis w/my dog and vets are not working out, I get on computer and plugs all the symptoms in and start reading rapidly...The vet did give it sounds like the right meds to start off with, did she recently get vaccination?? Cushings sounds like your symptoms too, I am so sorry for your grief and frustrations, I wish there was better opinions/advice for you...Sometimes animal hospitals see more drastic and the worse of symptoms and have been known to pull off miracles, cause usually they get the worse cases and more familiar...
When in Texas the laws for an expired pet are: you make take your pet if you live out of city limits and bury on property w/sulfur(you have to pour a lot of sulfer into the buriel place and plastic bag the body w/pet whatever keepsakes or blankets you want. Or they can take your pet for a fee and cremate and give you back the ashes for a fee, or they can discard the pet after cremation of their own way...I am sorry for you, I just lost a pet months back and went thru this...I choose to bury my pet.
Call you hospital thats far away and talk with them for advice...a pet will hang on to you and your love until he/she can no longer, they will hold on to your love, sorry to discuss such difficult matter, trying to answer your question... please keep us posted, give your baby a big hug for me!!! This site was very helpful to me when I was in trouble w/my dogs..

Doesn't hurt to ask your vet to do a phone consult with a veterinary internist in your area if you have one. They may offer some ideas about treatments and test. Good Luck!
