Dog treats

We have a dog, "Sparky" 4 yr old white shepard yellow lab mix. My wife is very concerned about the treats I give him. It's my fault I know I started something bad but each afternoon I'd give him a few Beggin Strips or Pup-er-oni's I buy from Meijer's food store, I buy the Meiger brand because it's cheaper but my wife is worried about him gettin really sick because of the food recalls from China and I really don't know if these treats are made there and imported. I'm cxareful not to give him too much but I do have him spoiled. Does anyone know if these treats are made in the USA?
Thank you.

FDA has a pretty recent warning out on dog jerky treats.  You can check their website under Vet medicine.

I haven't bought any treats made in China for some time.  You certainly don't want to overdo feeding treats.  Moderation. Pick a certain time of the day to give your dog one treat.  They will look forward to it.

You can feed fresh vegetables instead, carrots, apple.

Look up recipes for healthy dog treats on the Internet.  Make up a couple of batches and freeze them in small bags.  I have even fed them frozen.

I have a friend that has a dog that loves ice cubes!  She gives him two in his bowl every afternoon and he reminds her if she forgets.  :-)

Pup-er-oni's have by-products, sugar, salt (which is bad in large amounts for them), caramel color, red 40, and onion extract. I would say these are actually worse than Beggin Strips, particularly because of the sugar and - perhaps more importantly - the onion extract (onions are poisonous to dogs). Tony

Beggin' Strips are a brand of dog treats manufactured and sold in North America by Nestlé Purina PetCare division. Beggin' Strips are designed to resemble strips of bacon. The treats are considered to be relatively safe, but looking at the ingredients makes me wonder ... I guess it depends how many you give. One or two a week would be fine, but because of the sugar and artificial ingredient content, I would not suggest more than that. If you can find them, look for a more natural and less calorific treat, such as rice bones. Tony
